The Blog of Love for Megaman: Blue Bomber  Blog by FetusZero,  Category: Games

***WARNING: This blog contains spoilers. While Megaman does not have the biggest story of all, nor is it recognized for its story, the story part of this blog contains many, if not all of the spoilers story-related. I've made the choice to explain to people my love for Megaman which requires me to give out every detail of the games, and thus make them understand Megaman at the same time.***

***WARNING 2: Please do not cry when you scroll down the page to see the length of the blog, thank you.***

Today marks a very special day for me, and so it is why this blog was planned for an 11th of March release: Megaman 10 releases today for the PlayStation 3. I haven't been here in the past few weeks and I have yet to finish my series of blog concerning Megaman and today was the perfect day to continue spreading the love. While Megaman 10 was released March 1st on the Nintendo Wii and will be released March 31st on Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 version is the one I will be getting. Therefore, the following blog that you will read is a fake. How is it fake? It's copy-paste from my gedit Text Editor (same as Notepad in Windows, only I'm using Ubuntu) and I will most likely be playing Megaman 10 while you read this, or waiting impatiently for the store to update. With this out of the way, let's make place for love! Oh and by the way, please be aware that this will be a very, very, very long blog, so grab yourself a coffee (make sure to make enough coffee for several cups), open up your favorite media player and play your favorite music, as you will be staying with me for a long time on this one. This is most likely my longest blog to date and I hope, for people's sanity, that I'll never go that long again. NoobFeed should make an emblem for the longest blogs ever written on the site, I'd definitely try to grab it.

MMD playing MM9
Here you can see Megaman playing his very own game. Note that he is not playing Megaman 10, as it was not released on the day this picture was taken.

Megaman, or Rockman, shall I say for the circumstances, was released in Japan on December 17th 1987 on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and still spawns sequels today in 2010. This alone could make Rockman one of the longest surviving franchise in the gaming industry, alongside well remembered titles such as Mario and The Legend of Zelda. What makes the difference though is that there is nearly 100 different Megaman games, excluding the several playable and non-playable cameos that Megaman characters had (cameo, in case someone doesn't know, is an appearance in another game outside of the main franchise. For example, Megaman, Roll and the Servbot are all playable characters in Marvel VS Capcom 2). The game looked beautiful and was very well detailed for an 8-bit game, and the music was quite amazing. While it didn't have the most memorable story, the gameplay had some new mechanics that made this forever growing franchise a success.

Megaman
Our favorite Blue robot.

The game is played as any side scroller/platformer you could think of out there: You are armed with an arm cannon and travel your way from left to right or right to left, shooting enemies and avoiding deadly pits in an attempt to reach you final destination; The Robot Masters lair (or the boss, if you prefer). Megaman has always been known for its above average difficulty, often considered to be part of the hardest games to have existed. Once you know how to play it though, it becomes a lot easier, still difficult in some parts though, such as clearing spiked gaps in which the slightest miscalculation will prevent you from ever reaching the ledge, thus plummeting to your death. But what exactly did you need to know about the game to make it less impossible?

First, it was one of the only games out there allowing you to progress as you wanted by providing the player with a stage selection screen displaying the bosses, or Robot Masters portraits in boxes. From that point onward, you would choose one of them and fight your way to the end. If you chose a stage which was too difficult, you could simply restart and try out another boss and repeat the process until you find a stage for you. It did, however, have a catch: Some Robot Masters were a lot harder to defeat with the simple arm cannon that Rockman had equipped, no matter the path or order you had decided to go with. That's when another great new mechanism applies: Stealing a boss's weapon in order to use it against the other enemies. Each of the Robot Masters had a weakness to one of the proposed weapons acquired when defeating a boss and it was up to the player to find which weapon is strong against which Robot Master. This became what we could consider as a core feature in the series. Each weapon also had it's own energy meter which, once emptied, prevents Megaman from using it. While the meters refill themselves after each stage, they can also be refilled in-game by collecting blue pellets (they change color according to the weapon currently equipped) which will refill a small or large amount of energy.

Rush
Megaman's best friend: His robot dog Rush, who comes and help him when needed.

While all of this may seem very simplistic with nowadays video games, just try and go back to 1987 and look at Rockman the way it would of been perceived back then. Quite amazing, isn't it? Both of these mechanism allowed pretty much anyone with enough patience to at least progress further in the game.. That is, until they meet with Dr. Wily, the all mighty evil villain behind all of the chaos. After defeating all Robot Masters, you are granted access to Dr. Wily's secret fortress, in which several stages take place one after the other with no possibility of coming back. It's you against hordes of enemies and bosses, to finally reach your final destination: Dr. Wily itself, whom you must defeat. The same applies here though, as even the fortress bosses are weak to one of the weapons acquired, allowing for an easier time within the fortress, though in most of the games, the weapon energy will not get refilled in between the fortress stages.

The first Rockman game only had six Robot Masters to choose from at the beginning, while the remaining titles had eight of them, each with the same core mechanic: Steal a boss's weapon and use it against the others. By following these simple rules established early on in the franchise's life, it grew a fanbase for whom the slightest alteration in this mechanism would mean the end of the name all together, as we wouldn't want to see Megaman any other way than it was presented to us when we first encountered the Blue Bomber. Over time, some new features were added such as Energy Tanks (refills health meter), Weapon Tanks (refills weapon energy) and a nice red robot dog called Rush, who will come and help Megaman by transforming into various objects such as a flying jet dog, underwater submarine dog, or get a simple recoil on his back to give Megaman a higher jump. There were more than just these items that got added though, but I'm only here to make you understand the meaning of the blog's title.

Roll
Roll, only wishing for her brother's safe return. Though I do not mention her in the blog, this is Roll and is considered Megaman's sister. The reason she is not mentioned is that she serves no real purpose other than "Rock and Roll". Add "Blues" to this for Protoman, "Beat" as the little bird..

Now that I am over with the simple, yet enjoyable gameplay as the core elements for the success, Megaman does have a story which could be considered never ending. It is ironic to call this the classic series as it does follow quite a classic plot of always defeating the same villain who is trying to take over the world over and over again, but to see this happen, let's make it clear as to what started the epic, never ending battle between Megaman and Dr. Wily.

In Rockman, Dr. Light had created robots to help the world achieve simple tasks, but his robots were then altered by the evil Dr. Wily in an attempt to take over the world (how surprising). In order to stop Dr. Wily, Thomas Light altered one of his first robot named Rock, whom he loved like a son, and made him into what we now know as Rockman (that's when you realize that the name "Megaman" is strange.. while Megaman is still called Rock, just imagine if they decided to call him "Mega" instead).

Dr. Light
The ever so nice Dr. Light, always ready to help the world and wishes for humans and robots to coexist.

That's it, end of the story. Of course, Megaman succeeded at defeating Dr. Wily, but as with every other evil doctors, Wily returned in an endless number of games, namely Megaman 2 to 10, all in which he also appeared in Megaman & Bass (Rockman & Forte). It doesn't stop there though, as the original Game Boy had it's own share of the classic series with Megaman: Dr. Wily's Revenge, followed simply by Megaman II, III, IV and V, some with all new bosses to face only to find Wily in the end. These Game Boy games are also known Rockman World in Japan, just why they didn't call it Megaman World over here is something I do not possess the answer to. For now though, let's concentrate on the classic NES series, one of which appeared on SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) and PS1 (PlayStation) / Sega Saturn.

In Megaman 2, Dr. Wily is back with 8 new Robot Master out of his own creation to challenge Megaman again and take over the world, once again. Megaman 2 was the turning point in the series. First, you could now choose between 8 Robot Masters instead of only 6, but the same mechanics applied for the rest. It did, however, had some new features implemented such as Item 1, 2 and 3 and Energy Tanks. The items were awarded to the player after specific stages were cleared, and they would help Megaman on his journey. Item 1 was a simple platform floating upwards, Item 2 was a jet-platform, allowing Megaman to cross the entire screen from left to right or right to left, and Item 3 is a platform that attaches itself to a wall and climbs up, to then go down after jumping off of it or when it reaches the maximum height of the wall. Some of you may recognize these utilities, as in later games, the Items in question soon became Rush, the good old morphing red robot dog who became Megaman's best friend. The Energy Tanks, as explained previously, are used to fill the health bar back up when needed. This made the game easier compared to the first title, and the incorporation of a Pass Word system definitely helped in that department as well.

The second game had it's own little twist here.. To the surprise of everyone, after defeating Dr. Wily yet another time, we find ourselves in a new stage. A simple stage, one corridor, no music, red drops falling from the ceiling and damages you (blood? fuel? unknown substance?), with a door at the end. What is this? Is something bigger than Dr. Wily out there? Was he being controlled all this time? Prepare yourselves as you meet one of the longest and most annoying bosses in the Megaman series: Alien. That's right, an Alien and his name sure is Alien, according to the Official Complete Works. Alien flies in a specific pattern and shoots one bullet at a time aimed at your current position. It all seems simple once you can time your jumps, up until you shoot him. The arm canon does not do any damage and only the Bubble Lead, a weapon acquired from defeating Bubbleman, can damage him and it poorly does so by taking away one bar health pellet with each shot (if I remember well it only does 1 damage, but in case I'm wrong, it could be 2). After this tedious battle, the starry night sky dissolves and the alien turn out to be nothing else but an holographic image controlled by Dr. Wily. End of the story.

Dr. Wily
Dr. Wily in all of his "evilness". What can be more evil than a deranged scientist trying to take over the world?

As you can see, Dr. Wily is the main villain and is to be expected in every single game. With these two title's story, I won't spend 20 lines explaining the remaining games because this would make the longest blog to have ever existed in the history of blogging. Instead, I'll simply tell the main story as it goes without specifying any of the games as this will make the blog less frightening.

After the unfortunate events that occurred in Megaman 2, Dr. Wily has been reformed and is now working alongside Dr. Light on the creation of a new robot: Gamma. As the creation is nearly completed, a disaster strikes the world as something strange is happening to the robots created to gather a crucial energy source needed for the creation of Gamma on an outer planet. As we should expect, Megaman is sent to investigate the incident and save the world. Of course, Dr. Wily was behind all of it, he even stole Gamma to use it against Megaman. He also created 4 Doc Robots which serve the purpose of carrying the "souls" of the Robot Masters from the previous game, thus Megaman not only has to defeat the 8 bosses from the outer planet, but he must defeat a remastered version of those from Megaman 2 as well. Through his journey, Megaman meets with a mysterious robot known as Protoman (Blues in Japan), but just what exactly is his purpose has yet to be clear. He seems to aid Megaman in his quest, though he will also attack him at the same time.

Doc Robot
A Doc Robot. These are the carriers of the previous Robot Masters' souls.

Once Megaman has taken care of Wily again, a few years (I assume) pass without anything big happening. One day, a new challenge is presented to Megaman as a certain Dr. Cossack emerges and sends his 8 Robot Masters after our little Blue Bomber. Like Dr. Wily, Cossack is after the world domination. Thus, armed with a new Mega Buster allowing him to charge his shots, Megaman is on the run to restore peace in the eight different cities that has been seized by Dr. Cossack. Later down the road, we learn that Dr. Cossack has been forced by Dr. Wily to exterminate Megaman if he wants to see his daughter again, who has surprisingly been kidnapped by Wily.

Dr. Cossack
What is Dr. Cossack fighting for?

Two months after terminating Wily's plans of world domination once more, Protoman shows up with an army of mysterious robots to lay siege on the city. Not only does Protoman take control of the cities, but he also kidnapped Dr. Light! While wondering what is happening, the epic battle between two brothers begins. Who will it be? Megaman, or Protoman? Further down the line on his way through Protoman's fortress, Megaman discovers the truth: This robot was not his brother at all, it was a fake copy all along created by Dr. Wily! Protoman was not evil and had no plans on defeating his younger brother, nor the cities. As Megaman fights for his life against Darkman, Protoman comes and saves the day, allowing the Blue Bomber to continue his journey and fail Wily's plans again.

Protoman
Protoman in all of his "coolness".

Several years have passed, it is now the year 20XX and the "Global Robot Alliance" has been formed to battle against Dr. Wily's never ending plans of taking over the world. A year later, after the Alliance was formed, the very first tournament was held to determine the biggest peace-supporting robot. Disaster strikes again.. A mysterious man appears, calling himself Mr. X, who is a strong supporter of the Alliance, and steals the tournament robots in order to execute Wily's long sought goal. Mr. X claims he was the one behind Dr. Wily all of this time, and now, he comes out by himself to carry on the plans and defeat Megaman for good. Who exactly is this Mr. X? Where does he come from? That is something Megaman will discover on his journey through his fortress, to once again, save the world.

Mr. X
Who exactly is this Mr. X? Doesn't he look quite familiar?

After beating Mr. X, who turned out to be none other than Dr. Wily in a disguise, Wily was finally arrested, captured and thrown in jail. Peace lasted only for a few months before 4 robots, programmed to awaken if Dr. Wily went missing for a set period of time, help Dr. Wily to evade from his cell. As soon as he could, Megaman rushed on the field only to find Dr. Wily already escaping in his classic UFO type of transport. Dr. Wily had to be stopped once again, and so the journey begun. Throughout the journey, Megaman meets a new comrade who claims being a friend, Bass. After letting Dr. Light fix Bass up due to the damage received while fighting Megaman, Bass destroys Light's laboratory and turns out to be none other than a creation of Wily meant specifically to test and destroy Megaman. Will he be strong enough to defeat our little hero?

Bass
Bass: Is he friend, or enemy?

Up to this point, the story somewhat made sense, but then came Megaman 8. While Wily was once again stopped in Megaman 7, there is no real mention of where Wily comes from in the 8th title. A robot of justice and one of evil were in the heat of a battle in space. After a humongous shot, both robots fell to earth. Dr. Light had readings of a strange energy on a nearby island and sent Megaman to retrieve that energy. Upon arriving on the island, Megaman discovers the secret base of Dr. Wily, who has retrieved the evil energy and created 8 more Robot Masters. Megaman returns home with the justice robot and fixes him up. During that time, Megaman is on his way to Dr. Wily's secret base and further down the road, the justice robot named Duo will come and help his new friend.

Duo
Who is this "Robot of Justice" exactly? And why is he helping us?

I will not speak of the stories within Megaman 9 and 10, as they are fairly recent and available to everyone. This will mark the end of my Blog of Love for Megaman regarding the classic series. Every single thing you read in there is why I love Megaman and is why the fans like him. He's Megaman, there's nothing else to say. I could speak of a lot more things, but this is by far way longer than I expected in the beginning, so there's no need for me to add anymore to it. I would love to talk about the music, but since the music is an overall experience that sticks with every single series, I'll make an entirely separate blog covering such aspects, combining the elements of every games. You will notice that I skipped titles such as Megaman & Bass and the Game Boy series, but that was simply to make the blog much shorter. I already had to cut in the story department because I had twice the length in text than I currently do. For the Game Boy games though, I unfortunately never could get my hands on them as they are pretty rare and I do not trust eBay resellers, therefore I lack the experience with them. Expect to see similar blogs for my next in the series!

Thanks for reading, I hope nobody cried when they saw the length, because I sure did.

Megaman Crew
Megaman, Rush, Beat and Eddie fighting together for everlasting peace!

@Xiao: lol yes I remembered the username Xiao.

I'm not sure what will be the story in 11, or whether there will even be one as I'd expect them to make a Megaman X9 in 16-bits graphics due to the demand in what I've seen of the latest "questions" asked by people for developers of the games. Whatever they come up with, with the weird story of late games in the franchise that they came up with, I'm clueless of what they could ever come up with for future titles lol.

Thanks. Willy is a true evil. I hate him. See Roll did have something to do with the story to save the world and Megaman Laughing Any guess what will be the story of 11?

I meant whether you remember the username Xiao?

@Sleven: There could be several things missing.. such as the Megaman Killers, Tango, the story of Megaman & Bass, Rockman Adventure Board, many more Megaman/Rockman games that were spin-offs like these, the secret behind Dr. Wily's plans which I talked with Bruno, the cheats in Megaman 3, the Ghosts N Goblins reference in Megaman 7, everything in the Megaman anime that has nothing to do with the games (they seriously should have played the games.. their story doesn't even make any sense in the anime), the first 6 robot masters being Dr. Light numbers instead of Dr. Wily, the unmentioned items such as the energy balancer, the most powerful energy source ever to have been used for the creation of Bass, Treble being the "Rush" of Bass, Auto appearing in Megaman 7 and 8 and having a reference in Megaman X3 PS1 version, the appearance of several past Robot masters in the Museum of Megaman 7, the fact that Megaman has blue eyes yet X has green eyes, Megaman is one of the first robots able to somewhat have "emotions" though this is much more the case in the X series, and there's probably more lol.

@BrunoBRS: While Harpuia is the most useful one of the bunch, I still prefer Leviathan ;D The first really powerful lady robot of the Megaman series, gotta love her. And congrats on finish Megaman X, gotta agree with you though, that's pretty funny lol I never paid attention to the "Never return" lol.

I did receive your last reply (regarding your last blog. Thanks for the links btw) but somehow not this one. Nothing after Bruno's mention.

There is one thing missing for Megaman. Did you realize what it is? I'll wait for another reply to see if you can find it. And, I remember your prom night getup. It would've been epic if you dressed as Megaman. lol

well, i called them, and both the PS2 and the GCN version of the X collection were sold already... so i'm doing it the shameful way. i'll play the first 3 megaman X on my PC Frown well, i beat Z2, Z3 and Z4 like that, so it's not that big of a challenge (i'm not proud of doing it, but at least i played them). already beat 3 bosses on X (used my flawled pokemon theory "birds should lose to ice" and lost a couple lifes... until i went X buster only and killed the freaking thing without taking a single hit :lol). also got the buster, the leg and the head upgrades, a heart container and 2 subtanks Laughing

the chances of me getting the zero collection are slim... unless they remaster the soundtrack and update the graphics, then it becomes a must. and you like ZX beacuse it's MMZ with the ability to control the guardians too (harpuia FTW!) Tongue out

@BrunoBRS: It might be cheaper, but I always preferred owning stuff under a physical form :] It costs me more though, but oh well. While CDs can also be scratched (of course, data can be corrupted too but it's more easily fixable), the first thing I do when I get a new CD is rip it onto my PC in means of backup, I do this before even listening to it lol.

The Megaman games have been known to disappear quite rapidely back then.. it isn't so much the case with the BN, SF and ZX series, but during the Zero series and before, the games would get discontinued within months after release, with the Zero series probably being the worst of them all. So whenever a new Megaman game comes out, I always make sure I buy it during the first week of release, when it isn't on the day of release lol. I'm eagerly awaiting that Zero collection and a new ZX game. Come on Capcom and Inti, give us a third ZX game :/ It's the only "new" series that I like!

noooooo... you got it wrong lol Tongue out they started selling the SNES games, since they needed room to start renting N64 games. it wasn't a gamestop of sorts, it was a place specifically for renting videos (and videogames). i also tried to buy sparkster, with no success >.> and now my local "gamestop" which also rents games has been selling used past gen games for a while, and i wanna check if they still have megaman X collection (i remember trying to rent it and failing all the time... it's sad how i like so much those games i can't even get >.> )

well, they're the best in the series, you should expect them to be expensive Tongue out get them on iTunes store, if you don't mind not owning them physically... probably cheaper.

avatar

FetusZero

on Mar 14, 2010

@BrunoBRS: Your shop never sold games before the N64 release? That's almost sad, lol. That's the only soundtrack I own of MMZ, planning on getting the other 3 eventually, but they're like the most expensive soundtracks in the Rockman OSTs, put aside the Rockman 1~6 and Rockman X1~6 soundtracks, but I already have them.

avatar

BrunoBRS

on Mar 14, 2010

well of course the zero series has the best, it's the zero series, everything there is the best Tongue out besides, the Zero Theme is just too awesome. best in the whole series, if you ask me. EDIT: funny, the MIDI version sounds way better Tongue out

and maybe the reason you like X4's so much is the same i like X3's Tongue out i mean, i never owned it, but i used to rent it EVERY WEEKEND. when the N64 was released and the shop decided to sell games, first thing i did was try to buy it... but someone else had bought it before Frown

FetusZero

on Mar 14, 2010

@BrunoBRS : It still only works for the first reply. Guess I'm gonna have to drop the whole bold and colorful thing.

Out of every Megaman games I've played, X3 is probably my least favorite soundtrack alongside Megaman 8, lol. It just doesn't have any memorable songs like the other titles, but music remains based entirely off of one's taste. The Zero series remains the one with my favorite soundtracks, that and X4, but X4 is only because of nostalgia since it's the Megaman game I've played the most often and one of the first that I actually owned and bought with my money. I spent countless hours on that game.. alright I spent countless hours on most MM games but even more on X4 lol.

It's too bad that the OST of X7 and X8 are so hard to get.. they're missing from my collection as well as a couple of others, the difference is that the others are still easily avilable.

BrunoBRS

on Mar 14, 2010

WHAT? X3 has one awesome soundtrack! HOW DARE YOU

and poor sleven and tanya, being used to find out the problem with the notifications Tongue out excluding that one time, it always worked for me.

avatar

FetusZero

on Mar 14, 2010

@BrunoBRS : Yeah there's a save system for all of the games on it. Also, it's the PS1 version of X3, meaning it has a remixed soundtrack (which still sounds awful in my opinion, I never liked the grating noisy sound the X3 soundtrack has) and has a couple of animated cutscenes, though gameplay remains the same.

The girl in pink is Alia, she's in X5 and up and acts as a navigator, giving you tips and hints here and there.

I've starting to think my notification problem is due to the simple fact that I put in bold and colored font the names of people.. which is the case, it's a shame since it makes it harder to notice. Either that or it's because I jump a line after it. Just telling you, sorry if you get multiple notifications on my part sometimes but I want to find out what's the problem with my notifications lol.

@Sleven : This is just a test for the notifications.. though you did get a reply from me up there ;p

@Tanya : Same as with Sleven, it's a test but I left you a small two words up there. That is, assuming you two get the notifications.

BrunoBRS

on Mar 14, 2010

well, no redone graphics is kinda sad (i did some research), but it's still X-X6 in one game. there's a save system for the ones that used to have passwords, right? and i might try to get the PS2 version, since i never checked if my PS3 has BC, despite being almost sure that it has.

BTW, i was looking at the boxart for some info on the game and noticed there's a girl in pink that looks a lot like Ciel... who the hell is her?!

@BrunoBRS :
The controls for the MMX collection are customizable I believe, so you can make sure they didn't put the "shoot" button on the "jump" button and vice versa, like they did in the classic collection lol. I have the PS2 version though, not the GameCube one. The only reason I had both for the classic is because both had different extras, but the MMX collection is the exact same for both consoles.

@Tanya :
Sure thing :]

@Sleven :
Well, Cossack didn't rescue her (her name's Kalinka), but rather, Protoman did. At the end of the fight against Cossack, Protoman teleports in with Kalinka, and thus Cossack stops fighting Megaman and Kalinka explains that Wily had taken her hostage and forced him to fight our little blue robot.

And no, it isn't me lol. I did think about dressing up as Megaman, but quite honestly.. a small and tight blue suit like this doesn't look too good on humans lol.

Really sorry for the edit since it sent two notifications to everyone (well, that is if they worked, otherwise it's only Bruno who got two of them), but I had made a small mistake in the reply to Sleven ;p

and yes i'm assuming you have it, because I KNOW you have it, it has "megaman" written on the title Tongue out

Sorry about the late comment. The blog was way too big for me to finish in one seating. I read half yesterday and half now. Read your reply to Xiao too. I was going to ask the same question like her. The basic story is that Wily kept bugging the world with his evil creation and Megaman (you) are there to stop him. Is that Megaman playing Megaman you? I think it is. lol

What happened to Dr. Cossack btw? Did he manage to rescue his daughter from Wily?

True for Zero, but he's like dead to me since you never see him again lol. That special cyber-elf (Jackson) makes you invincible I think, let me check my saved game if I didn't delete it..

Yep, makes you temporarely invincible.

I highly dislike Battle Network and Star Force lol, but it's all good since they arent part of the timeline, but rather they built their own timeline. I like to see BN and ST as "what if the technology went in transfer/internet/etc rather than actual robots?" type of thing, like a big spin-off.

oh, that "death in X3". he doesn't die, he just goes "oh X i'm too tired, take the z-saber" and then you get a fancy green wave shot Tongue out

i think i said already that i'm not getting the collection because i prefer new games to old games, no matter how awesome they are Tongue out and i don't know about the other games, but battle network 3 was one hell of a game.

@BrunoBRS :
It sent because you're the only one I;m replying to, but when I reply to several people, only the first one will receive a notification. I checked with biZZy and I meet all requirements for the notifications, so I'm checking whenever I can if it has to do with my HTML lol.

He doesn't automatically die in X3.. you have to make him die, and then you can use his Z-Saber ;p it's the most powerful weapon of the whole game. It eats up like half of the health meter of every bosses in one shot, even Sigma.

I prefer the Zero from the Zero series too, lol. MMZ is my favorite series in the franchise, after all ;p Hence why despite owning all 4 of them, I'm still going to buy that MMZ Collection when it comes out. Well.. It's written Mergaman on it, I'd buy it whatever it would be, unless it's written "Battle Network" or "Star Force".. if it did then I'd have to burn it. Despite being my favorite, it's the one I play the least often.. I guess trying to finish with an S-Rank in Megaman Zero on Hard was too much for me to handle lol.

it sent this time O_o

that thing doesn't count. he dies in X3 too? maybe if i actually finished the game rather than throwing the password for all weapons/upgrades (i used to know it to the point i didn't even need it written down somewhere) and play around the stages >.> i think what really keeps me from playing the old megaman games is the need for a password. i hate typing those things.

BTW, we forgot that he's "dead" most of the time in command mission Tongue out i think his "martyr" thing is overused Tongue out

BTW(x2) which zero design do you prefer? the megaman X one (red&white, green jeweled nipples, huge feet, bulky) or the MMZ one (red&black, no nipples, slim and agile, gun instead of armcannon)?

being completely addicted to the MMZ series, i obviously choose the slim design Tongue out

@BrunoBRS :
lol but I believe Zero is in Battle Network.  He was in Network Transmission on GameCube. Zero dies often lol. He can die in X1, X3 and X5 I think. He was ridiculously strong in X6, beating Sigma with Zero is just WAY too easy.

I need to figure out why it doesn't send out notifications though.. perhaps it's because I simply use HTML for the @ color part lol.

no i didn't receive it, but showed up anyway Tongue out as for "where the robots from the classic series went", the answer is "megaman battle network" :lol

no but really, at some point wily grew a pair and realized metaurs weren't effective and therefore, he needed some badass-looking enemies that actually were harmful... and then he died and left zero running amock killing random people, while megaman went through a forced "puberty upgrade" (he's a robot, he doesn't grow up) and became X (who the hell named him a letter?) so he could hunt zero down... which in the end turned out to become his friend and even "die" for him on one of the megaman X games (can't remember if it was the first or the second, but he definitely "dies" and then... well, they bring him back to life)... actually, how many times does zero die in the X series? isn't it zero's death the theme from X6?

i never owned a PS2. and for some reason knowing that the creator of the game cares more about the "sidekick that got his own series" than the protagonist is weird... but that's probably why zero isn't on the battle network games (although i'm pretty sure there's a special move that allows you to create the Z-saber)

@Xiao :
lol your comment popped after I wrote another comment. One day I'll get you them candies ;p
It's true that I didn't talk much of Roll.. but I mean her most important role was to sell parts in Megaman 8.. and that's pretty much it. Otherwise the only thing she would do is wait for Megaman to return home. She gets a fever and roboenza in Megaman 10 as well.

The reason I didn't write for these two is because they should be easily grabbable by anyone out there, in a legit way that is. Because if you go non-legit, the other ones are easier to grab, but I like keeping it legit ;p Plus, they're story is kind of irrevelant to the whole series, kinda like Megaman X6 to X8, since the series was meant to end with X5. The only thing X6 has is that they made an ending to fit with Megaman Zero's beginning, X7 and X8 adds a "prototype" of what we can see in ZX I guess, but overall they weren't even meant to exist from the beginning. I'm still going to write about them though. I'll do it in here because you asked though ;p

Megaman 9:
Once again, robots are wrecking the cities around. This time around though, Dr. Wily steps aside and says it is not out of his own creation, but rather blames Dr. Light. Wily goes as far as showing a faked video showing Dr. Light as being the cause for this incident and asks the fellow people to donate in currency so he can build an army of robots to counter this threat. With the confusing and people wondering whether Wily is telling the truth, Megaman goes out to defeat the rogue robots. Along the way, as Megaman defeats more robots, he collects memory chips which in the end, prooves that Dr. Light is innocent and that Dr. Wily was behind all of this since the beginning.. surprisingly enough.

Megaman 10:
A strange fever is caught by robots all around the world but does not affect humans, this virus is called the Roboenza. The first robot we with it is Roll, the poor and cute Roll. Not long after, Wily's UFO comes crashing next to Dr. Lights house and sas he was attacked by robots. He claims to have been working on a medicinal machine to create a cure to Roboenza, which has been stolen by the attackers. Wily now requests the help of Megaman who agrees to help him. After taking care of the rampaging robots, Megaman finds himself with Roboenza as well! In this situation, he cannot fight! It was Wily's plan from the beginning to get him sick so he could not fight back! But Roll, who was given a medicine by Wily, comes out and hands it to Megaman. As Rock tries to tell Roll that the medicine is for her, she tells him that while she can be cured, she cannot defeat Dr. Wily, but that he can. Now cured, Megaman goes and defeat Wily, who, in the fall of his plans, becomes sick with a human disease. He is brought to an hospital from which he then disappears, leaving a little present behind: Enough medicine to cure every robots inflicted with Roboenza.

There you go ;p

And I remember you from on here, that's for sure. But did you mean remember from somewhere else?

@Tanya :
Bruno is right for the Rock thing ;p
As far as having a fanbase as big as Mario, I think Megaman does, afterall, Megaman 9 was a top selling arcade when it came out and I expect Megaman 10 to sell very well too. Megaman 9 sold 60 000 copies on WiiWare on it's first day of release in North America alone which, if I remember well, was a record. MM fans are everywhere, you just don't know they're fans yet ;p

The difficulty will vary a lot depending on how you play, too. It's a game where once you get used to the mechanics and figure out the boss/weapon pattern, it becomes quite easy to do it in one life. Of course, I've been playing Megaman for years I can't even count anymore, so that might help too lol. But having a challenge is always better than being walked hand in hand by the game, don't you think?

Rush was useful in only one boss fight if I remember, which was Dr. Wily in um.. oh so many Wily fights I can't remember lol. But anyway, Rush Jet was useful in one of the games against Wily, though it was not his weakness, Rush Jet made it easier to shoot at the weak point since it was the only game that the jet didn't advance on it's own and you had complete control over it. Oh and it was in Megaman 3.

@BrunoBRS :
Zero probably is the reason why there's no more robots from the classic series in the X series, in my opinion. While many still wonder if it wasn't Protoman who went crazy (since like Zero, while nobody really knew what he was up to, he is probably the most powerful one out there) and such, but with Zero's past of being a Maverick, I personally think he's the one responsible for the end of the "classic" era. I love how many references to Wily there is in Megaman X, I even started a small list with references for a future blog in the series, but the most crucial one has to be in X4 when Zero dreams of his creator. I'll have to replay the games to make sure I don't miss anything though.. but for now I'll get as much Trophies as I can in Megaman 10 ;p

Oh and no worries, I don't like Bass either, but I do like Protoman lol. Zero is the new Protoman: He's the cool guy of the series. Zero is Inafune's baby as well, I remember reading in the Complete Works that nobody is allowed to touch Zero in development but himself lol.

You should have gotten the collection for PS2 instead. I had both, but sold the GameCube version. I'm not sure what they were thinking but they definitely messed up the buttons on the GC collection.

By the way, small out of subject thing, but let me know if you get a notification for this comment. Checking if my new placement for my HTML fixes the problem I had with past comments not sending notifications to several users. I'll be checking on your profile as well today to see if you receive it (if you can check notifications of other users.. dunno if you can).

If you don't buy me candies this time, I'm going to cry for the whole night ;( WHY SO BIG? It timed out few time  and then took me five minutes to load the page. Not mentioning the time I gave on it for reading. You will have to pay my coffee bills too Tongue out

As for the blog, I read it because of Roll. I had a sticker of her and her image grabbed my attnetion. She is so cute But you didn't write too many about her. You didn't write about 9 and 10 too. Not fair. I want know the updated story. You had the spoiler warning, so there shouldn't be any problem. Anyway, I loved the way Megaman story continued. It was boring at the beginning but new characters and serieses have made it interesting. It has that something extra which story of Mario doesn't. But, it is too late for me now. I can't play games these days accept the crappy games in my dad's mobile phone. After reading the blog, I wished I could play it.

You can keep one candy for writing so well. But rest I'll eat Laughing

Oh! I forgot to ask. Do you remember me?

oh, and the video... i didn't need to watch it to know the story behind Zero Tongue out i know he was a maverick (and Wily's last creation alive) that was "converted" into a maverick hunter. funny how he keeps playing opposite roles throughout the whole series *remembers MMZ3 ending*

oh and @Tanya - megaman wasn't created from rock, he used to be a robot kid named rock and his "father" turned him into an infant war machine (what a jerk) Tongue out

you might want to kill me, but i never really liked bass or protoman. i'm loading the video now. and i'll never touch aniversary collection again... unless they make a "classic controller gamecube"... playing megaman with an analog and the GC buttons SUCK.

and if you need some help with the zero/ZX series... i'm nearing obsession with that one :lol

Megaman was created from Rock! I was really surprised to read it. Now I understand the meaning of Rockman Surprised After reading part by part I realized that you were honest about the story. It’s fairly small and simple.  Everything you talked is the just the basic of the whole story.  Why Nintendo never concentrate more on to elaborating the stories as the series progress to 10? I think this is probably one of the reasons for Rockman not having a big fanbase like Mario. And, I also don’t understand why they thought of keep the difficulty level so up. But I liked the feature of stealing/acquiring boss’s weapons. Also Rush. Does he help during the fights too?

A separate blog on the game soundtracks will be a great idea. Maybe you and Koshai can team up and make something epic to remember.

The emblem idea for longest blog is superb. I wish I could give you one Tongue out

Probably the largest blog I’ve ever read. But to be honest, it was a pleaser reading it. Took me a whole class to finish it but worth reading Smile Looking forward to the next Megaman blog, even though you ended Blog of love for Megaman. But that was for the classic series, isn’t Tongue out

@BrunoBRS :
Then I suggest you watch Bass Ending in Megaman 2: The Power Fighters, or better yet, grab yourself a copy of Megaman Anniversary Collection or however you want and play it with Bass ;p

A fan is a fan, no matter how long or how much they know about it. I'm on the edge of "obsession" rather than aficionado! lol.

avatar

BrunoBRS

power fighters what? i'm not such an aficionado Tongue out

just finished reading... wow, that's a lot of story. you know, i've never been much into the "kid megaman" games, no specific reason. actually, i can't even say i've ever beat a megaman X game. i'm a failure as a megaman fan >.>

anyway, since zero was always and will always be my favorite character in the series, i know more of the story of the games he has some relation... despite not knowing much about the megaman X series' story (i think... well, i don't know much of the details, at least). i guess you could call me a "newer gen" fan, despite playing MM games since i was 5, on my SNES Tongue out

LOL! Do not worry my friend, he'll be there more than we can handle since up next will be the X series.. and then the Zero series. Zero will be there twice in a row! Plus, if I see where you're going with this (Power Fighters ending of Bass, just saying), I bet we'll see him around the corner in yet a third one.

on Mar 12, 2010

Nope I didnt cry coz I am used to reading huge blogs. Very nice retrospective blog you have written. No wonder this game is a cult classic with some of the kewlest features added during its time. Judging by the storyline, I would say the story is not continuous but episodic. Maybe its the fact that the game was made to have fun after all, so the developers focused more on the gameplay than focusing on the storyline. I am still cursing the game for being too hard. Great job with the writing and keep it up!
