Deathsmiles Limited Edition  Blog by FetusZero,  Category: Games

Hi there humans! I have come upon this earth to share a message from outer space..

..ok not really. I'm actually here to share with the good old community (we are all so old) the crazy Cave Shooter that Deathsmiles is, my latest purchase for Xbox 360. Before continuing the blog with pictures and a badly done video, I will start by saying that I am finalizing my latest review and it should be up any moment now, or in a couple of days.. or weeks.. or months.. but rest assured that I am finalizing it! The review will present itself as a monster edition for NoobFeeders following my blogs as I will also write up a blog to promoted an upcoming independent release in the gaming industry, giving you twice the amount the read! Now, some of you may know which game I am speaking of as well as which game I am reviewing, but those still trapped in the unknown will remain trapped in the unknown for now, unfortunately.

On to other news, the next installment of The Blog of Love for Megaman is slowly shaping up and will eventually come to life. To the contrary of my previous feature in the series, this one might need to be posted into different parts. The more I write for it, the more I realize the complexity it has become, thus requiring a lot of explanations in the form of elaborate texts and of course, let's not forget, the beautiful images. For now, let's all smile for Deathsmiles (cheesy pun intended)!

The box which contains the Limited Edition of Deathsmiles.

Cave shooters are similar to every other arcade shooters from back in the days, or shoot 'em ups if you prefer. "Cave Shooter" isn't a real genre, however, it is merely used to represent the games released by the developers Cave, which are known for their bullet hell, or curtain fire type of games, or if you have followed my previous blogs, they are danmakus. For those who may be new, danmakus, in all its simplicity, are games in which you fly either horizontally or vertically while shooting at enemies, which in turn shoot beautiful bullet patterns at you. It may sound like 1942, one of Capcom's classics, but they are much more brutal than any regular arcade shooters that could be found in our area of the world. Cave are popular for titles such as DoDonPachi and Mushihime-Sama, some of the greatest shoot 'em ups out there.

The game box itself, in all its flowering glory. From left to right: Rosa, Windia, Casper and Follett.

Since the largest market for danmakus is in Japan, rarely do we get a taste of their craziness over here in North America. However, Cave decided to put us to the test by releasing Deathsmiles overseas. The game itself contains three different modes, with two variations of each modes, adding up to a total of six modes made available to the player. These modes being: Arcade Mode (the original), XBOX 360 Mode (like arcade, but with better visuals), and the Ver 1.1 Mode (a mode made specifically for X360, with alternative controls). Each of these modes also a MBL (Mega Black Label) version, allowing for the selection of a fifth character and also including an entirely new bonus stage to play through, along with some different mechanics.

Each of the characters have what is called a Familiar. These little guys serves as an ally to you by shooting their own weapons. When focused, their attacks also become stronger, although the player sacrifices movement speed for it. In Arcade and X360 modes, the familiar cannot be controlled and will move on its own according to your actual movements on the screen, while in Ver 1.1, the player can control the familiar movements by using the right analog stick on the controller.

deathsmiles_plate
The beautiful face plate that comes with the Limited Edition of the game.

By defeating enemies, the player can collect what resembles skulls, which serves as filling a meter in the bottom left corner of the screen. Upon reaching the number 1000 (varies depending on the mode), you are able to active some sort of power mode where you are less vulnerable and deal massive damage to everything that touches your deadly bullets. Also, upon selecting a high difficulty a number of times in a row, Death Mode is triggered which causes enemies to unleash counter bullets when destroyed. These bullets can and will harm you, though your familiar can "eat" the bullets and transfer them as points.

deathsmiles_set
The complete set of the Limited Edition, containing the beautiful box, the game and Premium Arrange Album soundtrack, along with a nicely themed face plate for the Xbox 360.

Overall, despite being a short game as it takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes to reach the end, you can find plenty to do in Deathsmiles, whether it is enjoying the different modes or playing through with every character, perfecting your method for a 1 Credit Clear playthrough, or enjoying the ridiculously hard Level 999 difficulty in the Mega Black Label version of the modes. Since we rarely get such an opportunity as gamers in this continent, buying Deathsmiles will show Cave and other developers alike that there is, indeed, a market for these type of games over here, and perhaps one day I won't have to import them anymore, eliminating the often ridiculous price of shipping for items coming from japan.

Despite not owning a capture card yet, I wanted to be able to show some footage of the game to all of you which in its turn, will make it a lot easier to understand what I've been talking about throughout the blog. Of course, I could of simply taken a pre-made trailer video made for the release of the game, but it just didn't feel the same as making my own video. Therefore, I went took the cheap, dirty road and recorded my very own TV screen with a video camera. Fortunately for you people, it actually didn't turn out to be that bad. I even included the NoobFeed introduction, along with a watermark this time around. I tried making this video feel as much as possible as a trailer of some sort, but my footage was limited and so it may not give the best impression.. but it is, however, good enough for me. Enjoy and remember.. support these crazy Japanese developers for me :]

@Sleven @SitiZal

Sleven: With my job it became a habit to check the information of our clients, and I put that to work even at home for other companies lol. When a franchise interests me, I just like knowing where it comes from and especially with independent games as they tend to be less known than big companies, yet a lot of them deserves the spotlight MUCH more than some of the bigger companies.

SitiZal: Thanks for the nice comment :] And of course it's fun to play ;p

How do you know so much about the companies? Do you really go in depth of every thing you see or read? I never care what company is how big though Tongue out

I kept my fingers crossed for the Fetus virus. Though I was happy to read that Megaman will appear again in your blog Smile

@Sleven: Don't worry for the late comment ;p The games you are refering to are probably Touhou. The only reason that the details of this game would be better is because it is developed by Cave, which is rather a very big company where Touhou is made by Team Shanghai Alice. While Deathsmiles is made by a company with around 150 employees under its roof, Team Shangai Alice is a one man Japanese independent developer known as ZUN, who is, I believe, an alcoholic, so the difference has to lie somewhere in there ;p

I'm not sure for what reason exactly you are keeping your fingers crossed lol, but yep, there will be more blogs for Megaman.. in fact, there should be 4 more of them, even 5. Out of them 4-5, I expect most of them to be submitted in 2-3 parts, which makes a lot of blogs left. It sure takes me a very long time to write these though, so don't expect it to surface tomorrow ;p Plus, I need to replay through the entire series that is talked about in the blog, which I still haven't done.

Sorry about the late comment mate. I usually take time for your blog since I don't want to miss any detail you pour into each.

I remember you played another similar game and posted sequel blog on it. The detail of this game looks better and gameplay too. Accept the things is that it's a rather short game. Glad to hear that you've had fun playing it.

And, I though you finished the series Love for Megaman. It'll be cool to read about from you though Laughing And only God knows what you are pouring into your blog. I keep my fingers crossed for it Tongue out

@Koshai @Xiao

Koshai: It's the first time I change my faceplate lol, while it's nice I wouldn't mind something else, but hey it sure beats the regular, boring old black faceplate that comes pre-installed on my X360 lol. I never thought about danmakus the way you described it though.. Maybe I am developing some good reflexes from it ;p

Xiao: Girls in animes hardly ever look Japanese to begin with lol. Might explain why i still find it weird when I see Japanese people cosplaying. Although they tend to have the better costumes, it's just their overall look that doesn't fit their own animes lol. Don't worry though, I work with a couple of Japanese people and to the contrary of many guys from what i can tell, they aren't my dream girls either (in the way that, you know, everyone seems to have their favorite nationalities as far as dream girls/guys go, sort of like guys and Swedish girls).

oh I'm sorry. I miss read it. I didn't understand the meaning of face plate. But now I do Laughing

Japanese girls are rather totally opposite in real life. So be careful before falling for anything. You aren't a young kid though Tongue out But you can never be too careful. Sleven is half japu, ask him if you want to be sure Tongue out

I guess this games are meant for people to addicted in a very good way. Imagine you get addicted to this sort of game, when you keep on practice and practice and finally become the bullet dodging master. That means you are extremely skillful due to this addiction. Also you memorize the patterns and use your thoughts to make quick decision. Its mental development even it is a sort of addiction. Who says addiction kills? I would say addiction rules.

Btw nice faceplate. Hmm!! I need to change my own one. My Halo 3 design is getting outdated.

@Tanya @Xiao

Tanya: When you're in Death Mode, the enemies release yellow bullets when they are destroyed, which basically only means more bullets to avoid. I can't help it though.. I just love these games lol. And don't worry for the future blogs, they won't be so bad ;p I'll actually seperate one of them in different parts just so no one dies while reading it lol. That is, only if it is needed though.

Xiao: lol no, you must have red it wrong, or I typed it wrong, either way, it's only the X360 face plate that comes with the game (the plastic cover that's on the front), I already have a X360 and have had it for about 1 year or something. Plus, the only games that warrant a purchase of a console is Megaman, everyone should know that ;p
I have to admit I have a lil' something for girls in animes, but only because they always have to make them so cute! Especially in the costumes department, their clothes are always amazing. Plus, it isn't me who decided that the majority of danmakus would feature anime girls lol, I can't say why, but if you noticed, anime girls are everywhere in Japanese stuff.. perhaps it's a cheap and easy way to attract young Japanese boys? After all, Love Plus is Japanese and is one of the most popular game in Japan. Quite honestly, the sole thought of this thing makes me sick -_-

You must be very rich. You bough consoles for game Surprised I think you have soft corner for Japanese girls. It's ok if you admit it. I have many Japu friends Wink I got lost in the first part of the blog. Then I realized I was reading about something else not the Deathsmiles. After finishing the game you payed  to play the clear playthrough? And when you say ridiculously hard Level, I feel laughing.

Not again another bullet pattern game. I have no idea how you kept up with that speed. Perhaps that the reason the game took you only 45 mins to finish. And, I liked the idea of collecting skulls but not sure what happens in Death Mode.

What a scary way to start a blog. With the news of review and the blog of God knows what size. lol.
