The Console

The Switch is a hybrid console that combines home gaming with handheld gaming. On the go, the system produces a resolution of 1280x720p and full 1080p through HDMI connection on a television. While docked the system can be interacted with using the standard Joy-Con controllers or using a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (Sold Separately).

As a handheld the system can be linked up to 8 controllers for local multiplayer. The tablet itself is about the size of a Wii U tablet but not as thick.

Online Service

The Switch will feature a new online service that will be free at launch but a premium service will be added in Fall 2017.

"This service lets Nintendo Switch owners enjoy online multiplayer gaming as well as a dedicated smartphone app that connects to your Nintendo Switch system and helps you connect with friends for online play sessions" According to Nintendo.

The service will also allow subscribers to download an NES or Super Nintendo game for one month to play for free. Once the month is up a new title will replace it and the previous game will no longer be free.

No Street Pass or Miiverse

The Nintendo Switch won't be replacing the Nintendo 3DS. For dedicated handheld gaming, gamers can still rely on Nintendo to support the 3DS. Considering that Nintendo is releasing a premium online service it's likely they are working on a different social media system for the Switch.

No Virtual Console at Launch or Video Streaming

At launch, Nintendo Switch will not support VIrutal Console, Netflix, or YouTube. eShop will be available but only for console updates.

Controllers

The included Joy-Con controllers can be used with the system or as 2 separate controllers. A Controller Pro option is available as an optional purchase.

The right Joy-Con has an IR camera that can tell how far your hand is, an NFC reader for Amiibo support. The left Joy-Con controller has a capture button for screenshots and will eventually get video support.

The straps, provided by Nintendo, slides over the long end to prevent it from dropping. They can be combined with a Joy-Con Grip in the middle to form a single controller.
