sometimes, when i click on the "new posts" number, it still sends me a couple pages back, rather than the last post i've seen on that topic. sometimes it even sends me back to page 1. with some threads, it's no problem, but it can get pretty annoying when it happens on the sexy wars, for example.

Try to reset the Number of posts in each page from the your Pref page. Let me know if you still face any problem after that.

no, my "standard posts/page" was already at 50 before, so i changed it to 20, applied and then changed back to 50... didn't seem to work.

Same here.  Now that I have 40 posts per page (that or 50, can't remember) when it happens I only have to move a page or two... but its still occuring.
