I've heard some people say that cheat codes take the fun away from video games, claiming the challenge they bring is hampered by them (not to mention that they tend to disable achievements). While there are others who actually use them regularly. For those who never do, I can understand that challenge is good, but the other side can argue that cheat codes are there for a reason. Why else would developers put them there?

 

Me personally, I almost never do. The only games I've used cheat codes on are the Grand Theft Auto games (tearing up the place with unlimited ammo never gets old) and Starcraft.

 

So I guess playing video games with or without cheat codes are fun both ways...? Ye be the judge.

I only used cheats in Grand Theff Auto games, but since they disable trophies I don't use it. Now to answer your question in the end, I would say using cheats are fun in both ways.

Never. Cheat codes are too old school. Totally kills the fun of any game. Even if I'm stuck for weeks, it's more fun.

Once I beat a game, or in a game where it doesn't affect your powers... like, if it's a new costume or something like that, it's okay... but something like infinite ammo I try to avoid until it's beaten.

I use them only in cases I'm not able to advance. But that doesn't happen often.... Actually I cannot remember now when I used some for the last time...

I do feel that cheat codes take the challenge and fun out of a game, but I actually got stuck in a circumstance once where I had to use a cheat code or start the game over. It was in Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, and I got locked into a trailer tthat wasn't supposed to be locked at the dig site. I think what happened is the computer thought I was walking out the door, but I saw something I missed in the trailer so I turned around. However, the door to the trailer shut anyways and wouldn't open again since I wasn't on the outside going in. I had already saved, so I was stuck. The cheat code was to skip to any chapter, so instead of starting the game over, I just restarted the chapter. I had to fix a glowing green gun that came with the code, but once that was out of the way I continued no problem. Since then I've been saving two files, just in case.
