Take a look at the Customization Trailer for Need For Speed Payback

The new iteration of the Need For Speed series brings back customization. And it's a glorious return!

I had a bit of fun watching the Need For Speed Payback E3 trailer. I have never said it upfront but I used to be a big fan of Racing games, it was one of the things that got my blood pumping. Nowadays I only return to maybe Hot Pursuit at best. But the new game by EA has been interesting so far.

Now the game shows customization systems and derelict cars, which you can rebuild from scrap over the course of the game. And this is basically a very attractive feature because now, every single piece of the car can be modified. In other words, you can make a car that’s purely your own.

You’ll also be getting new pieces that improve the performance of your custom car according to the placements you get in races. The better your placing is, the more pieces you’ll get. You can also go to Tune-Up shops to further modify your cars and beat your opposition.

The trailer also takes the liberty of showing what bonuses will be available for those who pre-order. As previously announced, you'll be able to grab the Platinum Car Pack, which grants instant access to the following five cars:

  • Nissan 350Z 2008
  • Chevrolet Camaro SS 1967
  • Dodge Charger R/T 1969
  • Ford F-150 Raptor 2016
  • Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport 2016

What’s interesting about this is that now you can find scrapped or abandoned old cars and turn them into competitive racing cars. This adds to the replay value, now how these parts are obtained remains to be seen. I would have it being an unlockable and not a ploy for a microtransaction plan.

Since this is EA we’re talking about however. I can only be cautiously optimistic. Maybe the system becomes something that adds a very good portion of longevity to the game, or it is another “Pay To Win” mechanic that we have been seeing in other vehicles for a while. It depends, really.
