Back in 2009, FromSoftware released Demon's Souls, the first installment in the Dark Souls franchise. The game would set the tone for its punishing difficulty and become the edifice of the gaming community to rate other games in terms of challenge. After 9 years the online service of the game is being shut down according to statements from Sony Japan, Atlus, and Namco Bandai, the game’s publishers in Japan, the US, and Europe, respectively.

"After 9 years of reoccurring deaths and frustrations, but just as many triumphs of dedication, Demon's Souls online servers will terminate on February 28, 2018. Play online one last time, and share with us your best Demon's Souls moment!" according to the game's official Twitter.

The servers were originally set to go offline in 2010 but Atlus has kept them alive since 2012 thanks to the community of fans. Though online services were shut down the game remained active with planned shutdowns pushed back. This means that players will no longer find bloodstained messages from other players, play cooperatively, or invade other worlds. This also includes the World Tendency, an online system which influences the difficulty of each world and controls various in-game events, will be terminated.

The final installment in the franchise, Dark Souls 3, is now available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. FromSoftware's latest game, Code Vein, is set to release in 2018 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
