What do you do when people try and shut down your favorite game? Do you go outside to play? Do you move on to greener pastures? Do you reminisce about the good times? If you’re Star Wars enthusiasts, the chances of those answers being positively answered are slim to none. More so, you’re most likely to throw a hissy fit.
It is as such that players from SOE’s Star Wars Galaxies have come together to stop its closure on December 15. With the arrival of new MMO The Old Republic, it seems only natural that the age old Galaxies would get sent off respectfully, but that’s not to some die-hard fans’ tastes. And so, over 3.000 players are now mentioned to be preparing for a class action suit against SOE and select players have been promoting petitions online.
In response, Sony has been locking threads promoting the uproar on their forums and banning player insurgents, which is supported by their End User License Agreement. They’ve also identified a “ring leader,” which was even threatened with criminal charges and permanent banning of all SOE products. It seems Sony isn’t taking matters lightly, but Star Wars fans are known for their dedication, so this will be a battle of minds.
But here’s the good part: The petition not only demands the game to stay open, but also has some suggestions on how to run it; namely through a free-to-play model. Additionally, they’d also like that Sony adheres to their ideas on servers and character transfers.
Now, I find it awesome that people are coming together to save their favorite pastime and sticking up for yourself is wonderful. But when you go around demanding the creators to run the game however you like, that pretty much implies that they’re your slaves. That kind of makes you a dick. So, here’s my advice: Play The Old Republic. It’s going to be the same thing, only better, so stop whining. This is unbelievable; it’s like some sort of galactic war with a massive empire of sorts being attacked by a rebel alliance of some kind.
