FIFA 12 Launch *Update*  News by fishdalf

Football is massively popular. That in mind, it stands to reason that football sims also enjoy success. Case in point, EA’s multi-million-selling FIFA series.

FIFA 12, the latest installment in the football franchise, netted more than 400,000 PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 pre-orders in the weeks leading up to its North American release, according to VGChartz numbers.

Producer David Rutter promised “revolutionary” changes to the game’s formula, rather than minor tweaks and updates to game modes, EA Canada included a “trinity” of gameplay alterations, including the robust Impact Engine, which greatly improves collision detection and momentum preservation.

The Impact Engine allows for much more realistic collisions and scuffles.

Other additions include updated defense mechanics and precision dribbling, which allows for increased mobility while fending off opposing players.

The studio’s efforts seems to have paid off: FIFA 12’s critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with a 92% average on aggregator website Metacritic.

FIFA 12 released September 27 in North America and September 30 in Europe, with fans lining up at midnight to be one of the first to get their hands on a copy of the game set to keep them busy for the next twelve months.

UPDATE
: FIFA 12’s launch became the biggest in sports video games’ history when it sold 3.2 million copies in its first week. The figure comes from EA Games’s internal sales data, which estimate sales at a 23 percent increase over FIFA 11.

“FIFA 12 is a stunning achievement by our team at EA Canada,” said Andrew Wilson, Executive Vice-President of EA Sports, in a statement released by EA Games. “The massive FIFA online community has overwhelmingly connected to the new live services in the game, including EA SPORTS Football Club, and we intend to keep them engaged all season long as FIFA 12 follows the heartbeat of the football season.”

My brother got the game and one of his first impressions is the fact that defending is harder than before.

@ILIAS That's what the preview has said so far. Not exactly harder though, more like there are more tactics in tackling other than what we previously had.
