The Umbrella Chronicles NYCC

If Capcom expects to complete with free-to-play third-person action games, such as SMITE, that offer much more with less they’re going to add more to Umbrella Corps

While the video game selection at this year’s New York Comic Con unfortunately meets the standards of last year’s convention a decent array of games were made available on the show floor. Capcom came out with several titles and one of them, Umbrella Corps, continues to generate a negative image among Resident Evil fans. Capcom hopes to win over fans with this new iteration with it’s fast pace gameplay and quick match structure could prove fruitful if the developers play their cards right.

The demo limited players to one map, Team Deathmatch and one loadout. those who played Operation Raccoon City will find a lot of similarities between the two games, with the exception that Umbrella Corps works. Enemies no longer clip along walls and perform outrageous actions, and damage registration is accurate. As for the gameplay, certain elements still have to be tweaked.

Enemy zombies are mostly non-existant, some are used as cannon fodder for points and others prove to be annoyances.A variation from the leech monsters from Resident Evil Zero make an appearance from time to time, increasing the threat of these mindless creatures. During the demo I inquired about the possibility of a Tyrant or Nemesis making an appearance within the game, however the developer explained that future information will be released later. Of course the enemy players are the biggest threat.

Players are very nimble, capable of crawling at alarming speeds. This is a concern as I watched most players commit to this tactic since the speed plenty from crouching and crawling are minuscule. Shooting is precise and the diverse array of weapons including primary, side-arm and grenades allow for some hectic shootouts.

Right now The Umbrella Chronicles looks like a traditional budget title. At $30 not much is offered except a moderate shooter with average thrills. If Capcom expects to complete with free-to-play third-person action games, such as SMITE, that offer much more with less they’re going to add more to Umbrella Corps.
