Little Nightmares NYCC Preview

The most impressive game at New York Comic Con this year

Little Nightmares, once called Hunger and brought back to life thanks to Bandai Namco. This wonderful melody of horror, suspense, and puzzle solving was the highlight of the entire convention. After completing the demo an old feeling resurfaced, satisfied and thirst for more. I haven’t felt this way about a video game since Limbo.

The demo has you venturing into three areas, each with a different with a unique setting. The first area has you inside a child’s bedroom, introducing the basic gameplay mechanics such as jumping, climbing, crouching, and pulling objects. Immediately when I climbed the bookshelf I knew this game was different.

Most of the items in the overworld are interactive, and some objects are paramount in solving puzzles. For example, in the first area I had to unlock a door, simply enough. Searching the area I found a briefcase to reach the doorknob and enter the next area, it’s here that Little Nightmare’s atmosphere began to excelled.

In the next area I expected the same, but no something new was waiting for me. A butcher slicing meat, his grotesque face and filthy skin screamed killer. I hid and ran as the butcher gave chase. The protagonist is small and weak, running is all she can do. Dark areas are lit thanks to a tiny lighter. The last moment of Little Nightmare was the most memorable. Being chased by an unknown object only for the screen to fade to black immediately had me hooked. I want to know what happens.

It’s simple but impactful. The simple gameplay and atmosphere help Little Nightmares stand out. From a child’s bedroom to a garbage pit full of discarded clothes. This is a puzzle platform everyone should keep their eyes on.

Little Nightmares is scheduled to release for Xbox One, PS4, and PC in 2017.
