Gemini Rue

A brilliant sci-fi story-driven point-and-click adventure game which you don’t want to miss out playing.

By RON, Posted 24 Feb 2011

An intense adventure game that sets you in an uninviting corrupted future known as the Gemini system which is controlled by a crime syndicate Boryokudan. As a player you take the role of two different characters, Azriel; an ex-assassins; looking for his lost brother and Delta-Six; as a patient come prisoner, whose memory has been wiped out by a mysterious despoiled group of people. You experience a world which is despicable and completely corrupted, where identities are made and controlled, and your quest is to save the destiny of an entire galaxy. Previously known as Boryokudan Rue, changed to Gemini Rue for difficult pronunciation, features most of the traditional adventure game elements such as puzzle solving, interaction with a dialog system, shooting and investigation system.

Gemini Rue Review

The game starts on a plant called Barracus, where Azeirl Odin lands in search of his missing brother with no clue whatsoever but only the pilot of his spaceship. He does however know the name of a person how might know some information about his brother. And the story kicks on while you keep discovering clues and the facts tha lead towards his missing brother. For most part of the game you can choose between playing as Azeirel or Delta-Six and finish chapters that relates each character. In both character’s play there is one thing very common in that game which is the type of environment have been focused. This is where there the word ‘Rue’ makes perfect sense, that refers to the sad, dark and gloominess of both the surroundings.

The game will constantly remind of the old school adventure games with its retro pixel art, which might not be too tempting to everyone. To move around the game you simply need to click at the direction you want to head. To interact with the objects you need to right click on them, which includes the four basic icons which are eye, hand, mouth and kick; comes with the display of each character’s inventory.  You can also interact with your fellow characters by telling them to act together with anything if necessary. You also carry a communicator, using that you can call your contacts any time you want during the game. Sometime when you are stuck and can’t find your way around for the clue you are looking, the communicator might come in handy. There’s also Terminals which contains all the necessary information about Gemini system including person’s name, address, number, location map etc, comes with a handy search feature. You can easily drag and drop names from your communicator into the search menu. Other interactions like moving stuff, getting different things to work together are a very common and radon feature of the game. Based on situations the player will have to do pixel hunting too. Even though the environment gives enough clues but it’s a little annoying time to time, finding the right object or dialog you need to move on. And sometime they are very much predictive which makes everything very easy.

Gemini Rue Review

The game however is not only based on pointing and clicking. There are situations where you have to get involved with shooting sequences that requires keyboard presses. Good thing is that you get to practice all the shooting as Delta-Six and learn about the tactics and get skilled. With limited bullets and lack of movement options, most of the shooting situation puts you in a difficult tight situation. If not timed well and not shooting from the right direction, it’s obvious that you’ll die quite a lot of times. But the good thing is that the auto-save feature saves the games before every difficult situation that comes. If got the tactics right, the shooting part is fairly easy for you to accomplish. If you wish to make things more challenging there is an option to set the difficulty on a highest level. Rest assure you’ll die quite a lot of times and have to be pin point accurate with the shooting timings when playing at the most difficult preference. And, also the puzzles in the game worth mentioning. Even though the whole game is somewhat a puzzle but there are situations where you get to solve some direct ones. Mark my words that one particular puzzle which you play as Delta-Six will make you go crazy.

The game could be a little monotonous but it isn’t because of its sounds and voice actors. Surprisingly though, the original game didn’t have any voice acting included in it. Thanks to Dave Gillbert who later got involved with the development and insisted to add spoken dialogs in the game. There is a commentary mode in the game which is recommended to play after finishing the game at least once. You get to know lot more detail about the game and each environment and characters in the commentary mode. Not to mention the fun cuts of the voice recordings. The music is impressive and fits very well with the game ambiance. A piano based music combined suitably with the game ambiance such as rainfall or a machine room.

The story of the game is what impressed me the most. Each chapter of Gemini Rue made me passionate towards the next. And even after being at many predictive situations, you can never image the twist and turns the game has to offer in the end. If you are a fan of old school adventure games, Gemini Rue worth the money.

  • @Buckley: That's because you don't hang out with me enough; I could've gushed all over this title some time ago. Enjoy.

And haha, how sweet that I seem to be mentioned in the review, thank you whoever did that :D.

  • @RON : Most adventure games do have good storyline so plus point always goes there. Who said that point and click pixel hunting is not tempting for some people. I remember the game Runaway used the same tactics and the game was awesome, even though it gets monotonous. The puzzles solving and clues finding were top notch. Also it was humorous too.
