Astro Gaming A40 System  Category: General

Everyone knows how important the audio can be in video games or at least, it is one of the most important features a game can have in my opinion. You can give me everything you want but, if the audio isn't there it just won't work. Now, I have a nice 7.1 audio receiver hooked up to my HDTV in the living room, I'm all set up for console gaming in absolute HD, but what about my computer?

To this I reply "Astro Gaming". Some may have heard of them, though most have never tried them. In an attempt at finding a good surround sound system for computers, I stumbled upon Astro Gaming, which sounded quite familiar since an old friend from past websites had purchased from there and was almost literally orgasming over his purchase. Here I present to you my most recent and worthwhile purchase: The Astro Gaming A40 Audio System.

Astro Gaming A40 Audio System

The A40 system is the ultimate in video gaming headphones and the headset is the official licensed headset of MLG, also known as Major League Gaming. Coupled with the Mixamp, the A40 can output some amazing 5.1 Dolby Surround sound, all while serving as a nice headset to hear and talk with friends online, all of this in a headset audo system. First off, I'll show some of the headset itself.

Different views of the A40 headset

As you can see, to be just fancy enough, it comes in a beautiful bag for protection which can be used for transportation since, after all, the A40 is mainly used in video gaming tournaments. The microphone isn't there permanently as it can be attached/removed anytime you want and can also be put on either sides depending on your preferences. A40 is meant to be over the ear, meaning that your ear typically falls right in the hole and therefore, there is absolutely no pressure on the ears or anything, as if nothing was there for them. They are ridiculously comfortable and outputs a crystal clear sound whether you are gaming, listening to music or simply speaking with friends over a live call on the internet.

a40headset05     a40speakertags

The speaker tags serves to either open or close the sound. When removed, it allows the sound outside such as your telephone or girlfriend calling you out of the shadows to be heard. With the speaker tags attached, it entirely shuts off every incoming sound and you are then left alone with your headset and video games. They are extremely easy to manage since they are held with 4 small yet powerful magnets, allowing for a quick removal without bruises, screws, twists and turns or everything you can think of. A pair of foams are included with the headset to insert between the tags and headset to close out the sound even more. While the ones I currently have are the basic sets, you can create your own, entirely personified speaker tags over at Astro Gaming's website, allowing you to be stylish and show off your personality everywhere you take them. It is in my plans, no worries there, though I have to come up with a design for such. As can be seen, a set comes with 3 speaker tags: 2 full solid tags and one containing a hole for the microphone. This is so you can use two completely filled tags to cover both sides if you do not use the microphone.

a40mixamp01
The Mixamp is the most important accessory for your new A40 headset

The Mixamp is the key to delivering astounding sound quality in Dolby Surround. It is also the only way to hook up your PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 to the A40 headset. How is that possible? With these little things right here:

a40mixamp03
The different inputs offered on the Mixamp

Here we have a TOSlink (optical cable) entry, a regular left and right stereo channel, a coaxial entry, a PC mic and one MP3 entry. The USB entry serves to be used with the optional rechargeable battery pack, which I gladly bought. Personally, I am currently connected to my PC via Optical, giving me 5.1 abilities within PC games that support it. The way it works is quite simple: You plug in your desired source (for me it's Optical from PC to Mixamp), and on the other end, you plug in the A40 headset. As simple as it sounds, I now have access to 5.1 Dolby Surround sound on my computer, all while gaining the ability to use the microphone for online gaming or friends over a messenger.

Here comes something great too, let's take a closer look at the Mixamp:

a40mixamp02
Close-up of the Mixamp controls

At the top we quickly recongnize a volume controller, allowing you quick volume change at the tip of your fingers. Below this big wheel, we see a smaller controller written "Game" and "Voice", this is called "Balance". The purpose of this one is to even out how exactly you want your sound, which is mostly used for online gaming with voice chat functionalities. Yes, you can actually decide to hear more of the voices, or more of the game by the simple turn of a button. For my part, it's always maxed out on Game since I don't play online and when in Ubuntu, it strangely has to be on Voice, but that's not an issue for me. Otherwise you can see the master power button in the bottom left corner and the Dolby ON/OFF button in the bottom right corner.

Overall, the A40 Audio System has been my best purchase in a long time. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask me or to visit the guys at Astro Gaming's website to see more features. Yes they are expensive, but they are entirely worth the price, trust me on this one. Also note that I didn't include every cables in the pictures as I had to unplug the system in order to take the pictures, so some of the cables were missing from the boxes in the pictures.

Thank you for reading, especially those who actually survived reading through this.

huh, i usually play my handhelds on mute. guess we don't have that much in common after all :lol

@BrunoBRS: This isn't about handhelds though ;p it's mainly for PC, PS3 and X360, but I would still use them without the mixamp for handhelds anyway. How you can play a game without any audio at all is beyond me though o_o I'm not able to do that without quiting the game after 2 minutes lol, goes to show that everyone's different :]

i don't like playing without sound, but hey, i play my handhelds mostly outside, i can't go to a mall and waste extra battery on sound that i won't hear because of the local noise Tongue out

FetusZero

on Jun 09, 2010

@BrunoBRS: That's when you buy A40's, zero sound from the outside, my house would explode and I wouldn't even hear it ;p That being said I play my portable games at home anyway, I hardly ever take them out since I usually have other stuff in mind when I go out, which doesn't happen too often lol.

i don't think huge headphones are subtle enough to be brought to other places just in case you decide to play your videogame Tongue out

@FetusZero : Yeah, I tend to buy things myself when I should be saving, like this weekend when I go and get both PS3 Prince of Persia games and a Terabyte drive to back up my videos on since I plan to show some more video in the future and like to keep the laptop HD clean. Smile

@BrunoBRS @David_D @Tanya

Bruno: If you prefer your looks rather than amazing audio, it's your loss buddy ;p That being said I'll never bring them to work, too many thieves around there >.> Nobody touches my sweet little friend lol.

David: Oh yes, keeping the hard drive clean is important to me as well.. for some reason I'm some sort of "free space" freak, if I have less than 100GB free on my computer, I start trying to clean it up lol, which is ridiculous considering 100GB is a lot. I still am thinking of changing both my hard drives to get something bigger.

Tanya: lol yep, sort of ;p I'm just finally getting the kind of things I always wanted but never had the opportunity to get, nor the knowledge for the rest that touches computers a bit more.

actually, i think huge headphones are stylish. i considered buying one to listen to music at the street, but just like you, thieves are crawling everywhere around here Tongue out also, storing that thing when i'm not using would be a pain.

You should know that you make me jealous with blogs like this. I hope it's not intentional. lol. I never used headphone for gaming. I usually don't unless there's any problem with my speaker. But when you said typically falls right in the ear, I felt like I need one of this. But it sure looks expensive after visiting their website. God!

@FetusZero : omg that thing is sick. i was thinking to buy a Razer headphone for my friend since I dont use these headphones as I use sound monitors. Now I should consider buy this A40. Your review made me think this is an awesome piece of thing. And since I will it buy for my friend that means I will buy for myself as we share our stuffs. I really loved the inclusion of so many ports.

@BrunoBRS @Sleven @Koshai

Bruno: They do take some space lol, that's for sure. I'm considering buying a stand for when I don't use them as they don't fit around my PC case like my old ones. The case that came with the headset though can actually hold the headset, mic (of course) and the mixamp as well. I didn't notice it had place for the mixamp up until I saw it in the instruction booklet lol, but the case remains relatively large, you'd have to carry a backpack for them.. which is when you buy a backpack made especially for gamers by Astro! Entirely made to carry all of your gaming equipment, including A40's! I won't be buying it lol, I have absolutely no needs for it.

Sleven: They sure are expensive! The only reason I ordered them this month is because they have a limited special duty free shipping to Canada, which means it cost me $20 of shipping instead of 100 lol, go to hell duties -_- they are always so expensive compared to shipping alone. I never used headphones before, up until I got an actual "gaming" PC, my speakers are cheap and don't deliver quality sound, and that's when I discovered that headphones deliver some great sound!

Koshai: Glad I could make more people interested in Astros! I can definitely say that with the quality product I've received by them, they definitely deserve it. Anyway, I've tried them on my PS3 recently and I must say.. WOW, it was entirely over the top and quite honestly, it sounded the same if not even better than my 7.2 audio receiver in quality. At first I tried them with WipEout HD, but then I decided to give it a real ride.. Killzone 2, right as you disembark in the middle of chaos at the beginning of the game. Right at that moment, I made everyone who was around try it out lol.

The only bad point I'd give it is that in order to use the microphone abilities on the PS3, you need to plug the mixamp with the USB cable.. that's not a problem if you are close to your PS3, but considering that the mixamp is next to you, if your PS3 is far from your sitting spot then you better get one hell of a USB cable lol. For X360 it works the same as with the regular X360 headset, you plug a wire from underneath the controller to the mixamp, the cable in question is included with the mixamp.

Be sure to compare the models from Astros and Razor though and see which one fits your needs or your friend's needs better since I know the Razors are less expensive (in fact, Astros are probably in the most expensive ones out there). There are dozens of great and astounding gaming headsets out there, it's just about finding the right one for your needs and the A40's definitely fit every single one of my needs as an audiophile lol, or maybe I'm just picky :]
