With over a hundred games in the series, Final Fantasy has earned to be called a big title. Although it’s been around for more than 35 years, the fans still want more. Final Fantasy XVI is on its way and is expected to come out to the newer gen consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but what will the fans do meanwhile? What are we going to play?

Luckily for us, there are a lot of great JRPG games that quench the fans of the Final Fantasy series! Some of these fans have to be familiar with and some not, but one thing remains: They are all highly praised games that fans are sure to enjoy.

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Games, Recommendations

Chrono Trigger

This is another one of the games that Final Fantasy fans are most familiar with. The most important fact you have to know about this game is that both creators made it to the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series and the character designers of the Dragon Quest series. The game was also produced by one of the Final Fantasy producers. Furthermore, the music was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, the same composer that made the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. That is an insane team, to begin with. Chrono Trigger is one of the best games that can quench your thirst for a game like Final Fantasy, and it is greatly recommended that you try it out if you haven’t already.

Kingdom Hearts, Disney, JRPG, Sora, Final Fantasy

Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts is almost as old as Final Fantasy, made by the same production company. Very recently, the game series celebrated its 20th anniversary. If you like Final Fantasy, you are sure to enjoy Kingdom Hearts. What’s more, you might want to jump onto the hype train before the newest Kingdom Hearts IV comes along. Furthermore, if you’d like to check out the older titles, you might encounter some surprises from the Final Fantasy series within Kingdom Hearts! Let us say that Sora and Cloud get along well and leave it, not to spoil anything.

Dragon Quest, JRPG, Square Enix, Final Fantasy, Recommendations

Dragon Quest

Dragon Quest is one of the games that most Final Fantasy gamers are familiar with. Designed by the same company that released Final Fantasy, namely Square Enix, the game first came out in 1986, almost as soon as Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest first came out to NES and since then has gathered so many fans from all around the world. It is a title that can almost be described as a genre-defining game, for it has been the first game to implement many of the JRPG elements into the genre. Long story short, the Final Fantasy genre borrows heavily from Dragon Quest, and every Final Fantasy fan would be happy to be acquainted with it.

Ni no Kuni, Wrath of the White Witch, Games, JRPG, Recommendations

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Ni no Kuni is another JPRG made in the older times when RPG was still a formulated genre, but we loved it nonetheless. Wrath of the White Witch is a remake of the older Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn, released for Nintendo DS- And the remake is just as good. The player follows Oliver, who finds out that there is another “soul” world and takes upon the mission of saving it. If you miss the older Final Fantasy games, there is a high possibility that Ni no Kuni will be one of your favorite games.

Nier Automata, 2B, Recommendations, Final Fantasy, JRPG

Nier Automata

One look at Nier, and the aesthetic immediately strikes you as that of the Final Fantasy series. This similarity does not end with the aesthetic; the series's themes are also similar. Nier Automata takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting where the world is at war between human-made androids and machines from another world. Just as it is in Final Fantasy VII, Nier Automata also demonstrates how the world is not divided in black and white. Not everything is purely good, and not everything is purely bad. The characters are great, the story is incredible, and the graphics will catch your eye.

Chocobo, Final Fantasy, Kart, Racing, Game, Recommendations

Chocobo Racing

As the last entry of this list, I have chosen to add a Final Fantasy spinoff game that not many people have heard about. Chocobo Racing is a kart racing game developed for the first Playstation and released in 1999. It is an old game indeed, but if you’d prefer newer games, you might want to check out Chocobo GP, the direct sequel for this game. In Chocobo Racing, you can find Final Fantasy’s beloved character Chocobo and many other characters like Mog the Moogle and the Black Mage, all of whom are also Final Fantasy characters. Needless to say, if you like Mario Kart and Final Fantasy, you must check this game out. It is cute, fun, and competitive- What else do we need in life?
