With the rise in popularity of compact cases such as the Dan Cases and Lian Li A3 mATX, demand for reliable mATX motherboards has been increasing steadily. Among the latest options, the ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus WiFi stands out as a strong contender.
Supporting Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 processors, it comes in at around $219 in the US, making it an appealing choice for mid-sized builds without compromising on features.

What Comes in the Box
The packaging is kept fairly minimal, including essentials like the WiFi antenna for the built-in WiFi 6E (note that WiFi 7 is not supported), standard documentation, and a set of stickers for labeling board components.
Also included are spare M.2 screws and standoffs, plus SATA cables for 2.5in SSDs or 3.5in hard drives. The simplicity makes it straightforward to get started.
Board Layout and Design
The ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus WiFi features a slightly different component layout compared to other boards. On the bottom-left, you'll find the front panel audio header, a PWM fan header, a serial port header, a single USB 2.0 header, and the main front panel connectors. Four SATA ports allow for additional storage expansion.
Moving upward, the board offers a USB 3.2 Type-A header, a front panel USB Type-C header, and the 24-pin power connector. Interestingly, ASUS has included three 5V addressable RGB headers placed right next to each other, ideal for lighting-heavy builds.
Cooling support includes several PWM fan headers across the board, plus dual EPS power connectors for stable power delivery to Ryzen CPUs.
PCIe and VRM Setup
For expansion, the board comes with one PCIe Gen5 x16 slot and one PCIe Gen4 x1 slot. The main X16 slot uses a bar-style quick-release system, making GPU installation and removal easier.
In terms of power, the VRM design consists of a 14+2+1 phase setup with 80A smart power stages, supported by large heatsinks for efficient heat dissipation.
The I/O cover doubles as an extended heatsink for the VRMs, ensuring reliable cooling under heavy loads.

Socket and Memory Support
The board utilizes the standard AM5 socket, which is fully compatible with both AM5 and AM4 cooler mounts. For memory, four DDR5 DIMM slots are supporting up to 256GB at speeds up to 8000MT/s. It's important to note that these speeds are official specifications, not guaranteed recommendations.
Storage Options
Storage support is well-rounded for an mATX board. It includes three M.2 slots in total—one PCIe Gen5 x4 and two PCIe Gen4 x4 slots. Each slot is covered by heatsinks, though there are no quick-release mechanisms for them.
Rear I/O Features
The rear I/O is practical and feature-rich, offering a mix of display and connectivity options. Users get DisplayPort and HDMI for integrated graphics, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 3 10Gb USB Type-A ports, 1 20Gb USB Type-C port, 4 5Gb USB Type-A ports, 2.5Gb Ethernet, WiFi 6E antenna connectors, an audio interface, and a BIOS Flashback button with an indicator light, providing comprehensive modern connectivity while maintaining simplicity.
Overall Impressions
Examining the feature set, the ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus WiFi offers an excellent balance for an mATX motherboard. It doesn't try to be overly premium but delivers what matters—three M.2 slots, solid VRMs, a Gen5 PCIe x16 slot, and plenty of USB options.

While we lose a few extras compared to higher-end models—such as quick-release M.2 heatsinks and WiFi 7—the trade-off keeps pricing reasonable. The inclusion of WiFi 6E, 2.5Gb Ethernet, and the GPU slot release system makes it a very capable board for mid-range builds.
If you want to create a compact computer, this motherboard is perfect for you. It's especially good for folks who have the Lian Li A3 mATX or a similar model. It is a wonderful choice for builders who want to find a fair balance between price and usefulness because it has a solid mix of performance, compatibility, and features for about $219.
