Dead Space 2: First Look

The terror is back…

Firstly before moving forward to the preview of Dead Space 2 here’s a small piece of NoobFeed advice; If you haven’t had the chance to play Dead Space yet you don’t know what you‘re missing. It’s simple as that. Still, if you have no idea of it, here’s a tiny recap.

In Dead Space you are Isaac Clarke, an engineer of the USG Kellion who’s sent out to aid a distress signal at USG Ishimura, a mining spaceship. Only when you get there it’s full of Necromorphs, which are alien-zombie-like creatures who are rather unpleasant and love the taste of human flesh.

This time, things are about to get nastier…

Now the setting/terror is larger, as it moves to Sprawl, a city in the rings of Saturn. The tight and claustrophobic rooms are back, but now they cover the entire city, which is also filled with temples, solar panels, satellites, and even a zoo! As of now, we are not aware of how Isaac got here. The only two things that we do know for sure are: a) The action takes place three years after the end of the original and: b) Our main aim is to stop the resurrection of the Marker – a religious relic.

From what we‘ve been able to see so far, Isaac has definitely improved his skills. Not surprising to be honest, as he’s supposed to have gained so much experience with the Necromorphs he’s beaten. He also seems more aggressive and with some new toys to play with can put that aggression to good use. One of them is the brand new Javelin Gun, extremely useful if you want to nail Necromorphs up on a wall OR even hit two of them with just one shot if it takes your fancy. Did I say that those javelins carry electricity in them? Well they do, and they pack quite a punch.

Isaac’s telekinesis has also been significantly improved, as now you can do pretty much what you did before, but with a tiny difference. Now your movements are sharper – a pretty important feature when you‘re short on time. His suit is also equipped with a new installment which really helps him with propulsion (remember the Jet Trooper in Command & Conquer?) The problem is that Necromorphs seem to have been improved as well. It looks like they have a new ability, a kind of moveable shield, created by Swarmers, which are essentially tiny bits of Necro-flesh.

To sum up, my first contact with Dead Space 2 gave me the impression that there’s gonna be much more action, more tension, more blood, and definitely more Necromorphs. Last but not least, Visceral have kept very tight-lipped about the fate of Nicole, Isaac’s girlfriend, who last we heard was reprimanded by the creatures, but rumours are spreading of a possible plot twist. Was it true or just an illusion?

Dead Space 2 is due for release this Summer on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
