Today at the Microsoft E3 press conference Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Ellchiro Sasaki showcased a demo of Resident Evil 6. A new biochemical disaster caused by terrorist using the C-Virus to infect major cities around the world has begun. Although I personally didn’t like the heavy action of Resident Evil 5 but looking at Resident Evil 6 it looks they might be able to keep the balance both of the elements, but only the final product will tell.
The demo starts off with Leon S. Kennedy and his partner Helena Harper attempting to recover from an expected incident. Right off the bat Sasaki showcased the amount of maneuverability you’ll have in Resident Evil 6. Leon begins shooting at the infected before jumping back to avoid the infected leaping toward him and rolling away from Helicopter fire. After escaping certain dead Leon head for the Quad tower in search of B.S.A.A agents and survivors held up in that area.
Leon heads quickly towards his new objective, disposing of infected along the way. While heading down some stairs in a newly entered building Leon encounters a herd of infected, some holding weapons, and quickly throws a grenade from cover. Continuing forward Leon is almost struck by a crowbar wielding infected by quickly disarms him and bashes his head into pieces. Slowly outside Leon witnesses hundreds of cars and just as many infected. Leaping down Leon begins fighting the infected only to have a plane fall, which was lodged into the side of a building, fall and explode. Attempting to escape the fire Leon and Helena runs towards and leaps onto it only to find a few seconds later that everyone on board is infected. Crashing into the side of another building Leon and Helena fall from the destroyed helicopter and finds themselves surrounded in every direction by infected.
Immediately you’ll notice that Resident Evil 6 has changed its gameplay mechanics to tailor to quick action and caution. Walking, running, sliding, and dodging are widely used in combat. Leon moves and attack like not any other Resident Evil game, the most notable ability being able to run and shoot. Instead animations are new and welcomes. Melee combat has also improved greatly from disarming opponents, to jamming a knife through their jaw, to even bashing the head of an infected onto the wall. Players will be able to used single hit kills and stun moves against enemies to save ammunition. If things become too hectic you can duel-wield weapons and it seems that you can auto-aim.
The trailer showcase a lot of information about what you will encounter throughout Resident Evil 6. You’ll journey around the world encountering new and old characters such as Albert Wesker’s son Jake Muller, Sherry Birkin, and Ada Wong. It’s revealed that Ada is working for New Umbrella and Chris wants her dead for the atrocities she has committed, however Leon needs her to locate the Derek C. Simmons, the presidential aide, who is connected to the outbreak. Loyalty, the fate of the world, and a lot of high speed chases shows that Capcom is focusing more on action.
During the final moments of the trailer you are treated to an array of high Die Hard like scenes with cars exploding, helicopter fights, DDT’s, and underwater sequences. Some moment’s high-light cooperative action, showing Sherry and Jake fighting alongside and what seems to be a bond that has developed between the two. Chris and Leon teaming up would be an incredible mission, if they can add Claire into the mix that would be mind-blowing.
Resident Evil 6 looks fantastic. The new gameplay elements allows for players to switch weapons, engage in close-quarter-combat, and perform fast evading maneuvers without slowing down. With new challenging enemies and a bleak environment Resident Evil 6 looks incredibly promising.
