New Year brings many new promises, desires and of course video games. But with so many titles coming out this year very few offer a female protagonist to lead the player through extraordinary adventures. However while this list is limited the developers of these glorious commodities promise to deliver some of the most impressive experiences of 2013. Until E3 2013 arrives to shower me with new reasons to plunge my hard earn dollars into the video game industry I’ll have these to keep me occupied and tense with anticipation.
Remember Me
Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
Publisher: Capcom
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Genre: Interactive Cinema, Third-Person, Stealth, Action-Adventure
Release date: May 2013
Remember Me takes place in the year 2084, where you control a memory hunter Nilin through the streets of Neo-Paris. To neutralize Nilin, her former employer Memoreyes, erases her memories and now she is on a mission to restore them. This plot is apparently new and shares similarities to Assassins Creed by exploring past memories. But I still look forward to play it because it’s a Capcom game after all.
Tomb Raider
Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Publisher: Square Enix
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Genre: Action-Adventure, Platform
Release date: 5 March 2013
Lara finds herself in her worse nightmare. A violent storm hits her ship and breaks it apart. She and some other survivors get trapped on an island. While struggling to survive against the dangerous animal inhabitants, she must trace the other survivors throughout the island. But that’s not it! She also has to fight through a group of spiteful mercenaries who wants to kill everyone in that island. I’ve never been a Tomb Raider fan until my younger brother forced me to play the last game, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Besides survival games are always one of my favorites.
Beyond: Two Souls
Developer: Quantic Dream
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Platform: PlayStation 3
Genre: Interactive movie
Release date: 2013
Do you know what happens after death? Perhaps I should ask this question to Jodie Homes who journeys 15 years of her life to uncover the true meaning of the entity. Honestly speaking, I don’t know much about this game but I’m more than eager to know that Beyond: Two Souls is really about. Besides, Quantic Dream has its reputation to make unique games and it’s not doubtful that one more master piece is coming from their bags.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
Developer: Square Enix 1st Production Department
Publisher: Square Enix
Platform: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Genre: Action RPG
Release date: Fall 2013
After the events of Final Fantasy XIII-2 I was left with so many questions. In Lightnings Return: Final Fantasy XIII Gran Pulse and Valhalla have merged after the ending of Final Fantasy XIII-2. The result is a new series of islands floating on the Sea of Chaos that now infects the world in chaos energy, preventing people from aging. To make matters worse the new capital metropolis of Luxerion houses a cult of powerful followers that force people to follow their faith or face exile. Lightning, who has been sleeping in crystal stasis for five centuries, is woken by the god Bhunivelze in preventing the end of the world that will happen in thirteen days. Aided by familiar allies such as Hope Estheim and Snow Villiers this legendary warrior seeks to prevent this atrocity from coming to fruition. Marking the final chapter of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy it’s no doubt that Square Enix will attempt to send Lightning on a remarkable final journey and perhaps memorable conclusion.
With E3 2013 on the way it’s likely that this list will expand. But for now I anticipate the day when I finally add these wonderful masterpieces to my collection and experience each exciting adventure for myself. Whether it’s seeing Lara finally figuring out her potential or traveling though Luxerion as Lightning I know I’ll have a rewarding venture with each one of these strong feminine characters. Now I just have to find a way to travel through time so I can get them now, maybe Doctor Who will visit me soon.
