Fifa 10: First Look

Unlike Pro Evolution Soccer; Fifa usually divulges their release dates pretty early on, and this year is no exception. They’ve pencilled the game in for October 2nd, which means fans of the series won’t be waiting too long into the new football season for their copy.

The game most people have played is about 75 percent complete, which means thing’s still need tweaking here and there, but there are quite a few gameplay elements that have been picked up on. The most noticeable comes in the form of a full 360-degree dribbling system that no longer confines the player to just eight directional button pushes.

That’s not all, if you now hold your skill button whilst moving it will prevent your player from making “sharp lateral movements,” thus allowing for easier ways to take on players.

Dave Rutter, the games line director, has also stressed that this game is trying to make thing’s a little harder for the individual, not easier. Traps will apparently now be harder to pull-off, as will lofted through balls. Both will now have a much greater margin of error that should separate the ones that can with the rest.

On the defensive side of things; your keeper will now make less defensive errors, as the programmers work hard to eradicate small glitches. The AI of your backline will also see improvements, preventing them from moving too far up the pitch, meaning they’ll be less vulnerable to counter attacks and such.

Thing’s are looking very promising so far, and it seems the team working on Fifa each year are making the effort to listen to what the fans really want. Even at this stage the mix between refined gameplay and overhauled elements feels nicely balanced.

Look out for our full preview in the coming months.
