Gigabyte MO27Q28G OLED Monitor Review: Best 27-Inch 1440p Gaming Display Under $600

Gigabyte MO27Q28G is a 27-inch 1440p gaming monitor designed for gamers who want high-end performance without breaking the bank. Utilizing a fourth-generation primary RGB tandem W OLED panel, it promises outstanding brightness, color performance, and motion clarity at a competitive price of $550 US. This review dives into its design, performance, and value.

Design and Build Quality

MO27Q28G features a sleek, modern design with a flat, six-sided metal base and a sturdy metal pillar. The small footprint frees up desk space while allowing a wide range of ergonomic adjustments, including height, tilt, swivel, and pivot. 

Unlike older OLEDs, the front panel features no bottom chin, resulting in a clean, minimalist appearance. The rear houses a simple plastic box with vents and ports, maintaining a neutral black-and-gray aesthetic without RGB lighting.

Connectivity includes one DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB-C port with DP Alt Mode and 18W power delivery, and a USB 3.2 hub with KVM switch support. Console users can achieve up to 4K 120Hz via HDMI, though chroma subsampling is required for higher refresh rates. 

The monitor's OSD is easy to navigate and features multiple display modes, gaming-focused tools like crosshairs and FPS counters, and OLED care settings.

Panel and Text Quality

The fourth-generation W OLED features an RGWB subpixel arrangement, which makes text clearer than prior RWBG screens. This monitor is suitable for light work and web browsing, as it has minimal horizontal shadowing and is just as easy to read as an LCD.

The matte panel coating scatters light more effectively than glossy ones, which helps reduce reflections in the room while maintaining the depth of black.

Times for Performance and Response

The MO27Q28G exhibits excellent response times, with an average of approximately 0.3 milliseconds and minimal overshoot. Performance remains the same regardless of the refresh rate used, making it ideal for gaming with various refresh rates. A 280Hz refresh rate gives you the same level of clarity as a 420Hz LCD.

Other features include black frame insertion (Ultra Clear) and anti-flicker settings, which make motion clearer and reduce gamma swings when VRR is active. At the highest refresh rates, input latency is less than 1 millisecond, which results in a quick gaming experience.

Color and Brightness

The fourth-generation W OLED panel brings significant improvements in color coverage, reaching 99.8% DCI-P3 and 84.1% BT. 2020 HDR gamut, surpassing many QD OLED monitors. Factory calibration is solid, particularly in sRGB mode, offering excellent grayscale and color accuracy. 

SDR brightness reaches 368 nits, 40% brighter than previous W OLEDs and 47% brighter than comparable QD OLEDs. Peak HDR brightness can reach over 1500 nits in small highlight windows, delivering a highly impactful HDR experience.

HDR Performance

OLED's per-pixel control enables deep blacks and excellent local contrast for HDR content. The MO27Q28G provides accurate default HDR mode performance while maintaining intense highlight brightness. 

Adjusting APL stabilization to high raises peak brightness, although some over-brightening occurs in highlights. Compared to QD OLEDs, this monitor provides a more consistent HDR experience with superior real-world brightness and deeper, more perceptible blacks.

Drawbacks and Considerations

OLED burn-in remains a concern, particularly for extended periods of static content, such as productivity apps. While the matte finish handles ambient light well, it slightly reduces the "pop" of colors compared to glossy screens. 

Some gray uniformity issues remain, particularly in dark backgrounds. The monitor lacks Dolby Vision support, and the model name, MO27Q28G, is unwieldy.

Final Thoughts

At a global MSRP of $550 US, the Gigabyte MO27Q28G delivers excellent performance and features for mid-range gamers. It closes the gap with QD OLED monitors in terms of brightness, color gamut, and text clarity, while maintaining the advantages of OLED, such as per-pixel control and ultra-fast response times.

The Gigabyte monitor is a better deal overall than the $700 ASUS XG27AQWMG. It has a matte finish, is a little brighter, and is a little better overall. The MO27Q28G is a great alternative for gamers who want a 1440p 280Hz monitor with great SDR and HDR capabilities.
