Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remaster Can Save The Series

The release of Vicarious Visions THPS Remaster is coming in September, can it save the one great series?

Activision recently announced that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 will be remastered in one package for release on September 4th. The game will be available to purchase on PS4, Xbox One, and PC (via Epic Games).

Fans of the original PlayStation 1 games were extremely excited about the announcement. The team behind the critically acclaimed Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy remaster Vicarious Visions have been developing the new/old game; with an emphasis on bringing back the 'old-school' feel of THPS.

Vicarious Visions

“I believe that makes us the ideal studio to faithfully remaster Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2” states Vicarious Visions Chief Operating Officer Simon Ebejer. “The challenge of a faithful remaster is knowing where to push the boundaries, and what to keep sacred,” Ebejer continued. “It’s important to capture the original experience.”

Crash Bandicoot

With the Crash Bandicoot remaster, it's clear that the studio knows exactly how to appeal to the target market; gamers who want the nostalgic 'pop' of a game with the graphical quality and nuance of a title released in 2020. Can Vicarious Visions pull it off with THPS? Hopefully.

Tony Hawk In Skateboarding Legend

The skateboarding game genre was completely dominated by THPS back in the late nineties. And, even for a good portion of the early to mid-2000s. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, 4, Underground and American Wasteland had strong followings. The cult fever around these games is still prevalent today.

When the return to the original series was announced with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5? The excitement for the series seemed to be brought back to the mainstream. This was the first time that a current-generation console had seen a new THPS game; sadly the game was a complete critical flop. What did not help matters was the game was clearly rushed out in time before Activision lost the rights to the franchise.

Lack of Skate 4

With the lack of a Skate 4 game coming anytime soon? Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remaster has the opportunity to prove that there is still life left in the skateboarding platform. With a loaded soundtrack and levels from the classic game beautifully rendered? This remaster has the potential to re-ignite the franchise and potentially see a new raft of games released as we head into the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
