A lot of people are excited about the new MacBook Pro models with the M5 Pro and M5 Max CPUs. Still, many are already looking forward to the next generation. Reports and early leaks say Apple is preparing a major change, which should happen either late this year or early 2027. People say this new version will bring significant improvements, including new display technology and better performance.
Current MacBook Pro Overview
The M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro are much faster than the M4 generation right now. The overall design, on the other hand, has not changed since 2021. The 14-inch and 16-inch models still feature the same mini-LED ProMotion display, a solid port selection, and the familiar chassis design.

Aside from the introduction of the Space Black color option, there have been no major visual or structural updates. This design has held up well for several years, but it is now due for a refresh.
Transition to M6 Chips and Design Strategy
Apple is likely to release the M6 Pro and M6 Max CPUs with the next generation. These chips will probably be made using a 2nm technology. Compared to the M5 series, these chips should be more efficient and work faster.
But the ordinary M6 MacBook Pro may still use the same 14-inch design as the present one, much like older models did when they switched between base and Pro/Max variants. This suggests that the redesigned MacBook Pro could be reserved for higher-end configurations initially.
OLED Display: The Biggest Upgrade
The most significant change expected in the new MacBook Pro is the shift to an OLED display. Apple has been using mini-LED panels, but many premium laptops have already adopted OLED technology. The upcoming MacBook Pro will likely feature a tandem OLED display similar to the one used in recent iPad Pro models.
This display technology offers deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and the ability to control each pixel individually. It also improves power efficiency, which can positively impact battery life. Additionally, OLED panels are thinner than mini-LED displays, allowing Apple to reduce the display lid's thickness.
Possibility of a Touchscreen
Another rumored feature is the introduction of a touchscreen. This would be a first for the MacBook Pro, as Apple has previously avoided touch displays in favor of the Touch Bar, which has since been discontinued. While some users may appreciate a touchscreen, others may continue relying on the trackpad for navigation.
Thinner Design and Improved Thermals
The redesigned MacBook Pro is expected to be slightly thinner than the current model. The reduction in thickness will be made possible by the slimmer OLED display and internal design optimizations. The overall thickness may fall somewhere between the current MacBook Pro and other thinner Apple laptops.
To improve performance, Apple is likely to redesign its thermal system. This could include advanced cooling solutions such as a vapor chamber, improved airflow, and more efficient fans. These enhancements should help maintain performance while effectively managing heat.
Battery Life and Efficiency
Even if the design is slimmer, the battery life should get better. The 2nm M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, along with OLED efficiency, should work together to improve power management.
Apple may be able to better accommodate the battery within the chassis if internal components, such as the logic board, shrink. The battery's size may not change much, but efficiency improvements should mean it lasts longer.

Connectivity and Ports
The next MacBook Pro is likely to include the same ports as the existing ones. This probably has three Thunderbolt 5 ports, an HDMI port, and an SD card slot. Apple is unlikely to return to the limited-port strategy used in older designs, which will keep things flexible for professional users.
Pricing Expectations
The price of the new MacBook Pro is likely to go up. The base 14-inch model will probably cost about $200 more because it has OLED technology and a brand-new design. Prices may go up much more for higher-end models, especially the 16-inch ones with M6 Max CPUs.
When the release is expected
There is talk of a release later this year, but the timeline says otherwise. It doesn't seem likely that the M5 Pro and M5 Max will get a substantial facelift this year, since they just launched. A more realistic expectation is a launch around March or April 2027.
However, the standard M6 MacBook Pro may still arrive earlier, possibly in October or November, marking the beginning of the M6 generation before the redesigned Pro models are introduced.

The upcoming MacBook Pro redesign is shaping up to be one of the most significant updates in years. The next generation promises real improvements, such as OLED screens, faster 2nm CPUs, better thermals, and a slimmer design.
