Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance Heads To Modern Consoles

The 2001 action RPG is back, but with few changes.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Interplay and Black Isle have announced that Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance has been re-released. Starting today, April 7, players can experience the game in 4k resolution. However, this is not a remake or remaster and still uses all of the same graphics and mechanics of the 20 year old release. Based on the world of Dungeons and Dragons, players take control of a limited set of characters including a human archer, dwarven fighter, or elven sorcerer. The gameplay does not follow the familiar turn based gameplay, but instead acts like a dungeon crawler similar to the Diablo or Path of Exile franchises.

The re-release seems to mostly be promotion for the upcoming Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance reboot being worked on by Tuque Games. That title is being directly published by Dungeons and Dragons IP holder Wizards of the Coast. The original’s legal status was unclear, as Interplay has gone through bankruptcy court but never officially went completely defunct.

The game is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. PC and mobile ports are coming in the future at an undisclosed date.
