On 25th May it was reported that Daybreak Games had canceled their upcoming Marvel MMO. It was announced that funding for the project would be redistributed towards developing original IPs and upgrading their previously released MMOs DC Universe Online and Lord of the Rings Online.
A week later and fans have gotten their first glimpse at the canceled game. Designer Ramiro Galen uploaded fifteen images related to the game’s character creator to his ArtStation account. Galen is an Austin-based UI, UX, and Motion Designer who has previously worked on games such as NBA 2K21, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and Halo 5: Guardians.
The Marvel MMO would have had a bright comic book aesthetic with “rich and vibrant colors with stylistic tones that pay homage to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Much like the Oscar-winning film, the game would have used effects such as text boxes and speech bubbles to add to the art style. Players would have been able to join either the X-Men, Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D, or the Fantastic Four and customization options included gender, body type, facial features, and makeup styles. Finally, it appears that costumes would have an effect on gameplay as certain outfits could add to a character’s Speed, Power, and Agility.
