Blizzard Cancels The Development Of Overwatch 2’s PvE Mode

Blizzard and the Overwatch development team are backing out from promises they gave few years ago.

During 2019, Blizzard announced the new installment of Overwatch, called Overwatch 2. It promised new gameplay elements, updates, changes and upgraded visuals over the first game. Overwatch 2 was released last year with high anticipation but unfortunately Blizzard couldn’t deliver most of the promised things they said at Blizzcon 2019. Except maybe the graphics, those are an improvement compared to what first Overwatch had.

One of the the key elements that made Overwatch 2 different from the first game was the development of a side storyline. Overwatch is mainly a multiplayer game with 5v5 in mind, and Blizzard decided to add more personality to the Overwatch universe by creating a story mode for players to enjoy. These so-called Hero Missions will be dropped as an update to Overwatch 2 this summer. But sadly, one of the other improvements that were promised in Overwatch 2 got scrapped by Blizzard, and info about it was revealed by the game’s executive producer Jared Neuss in a recent dev stream. PvE (Player versus Environment, in another way, co-op) game mode was ultimately dropped by Overwatch development team due them not being able to make any progress with no end in sight.

This out of the blue reason for quitting the development has left a question mark in our head, one of the main points of Overwatch 2 was the fact that people would cooperate together and play through missions while communicating and now they are seamlessly gone. Not all hope is lost though, co-op missions will be available still and they will be used for Hero Missions, albeit very lightly. The Hero Missions for Overwatch 2 will drop with the Season 6 pass, and that is planned for August this year. More content such as new maps, playable characters, cinematics and multiplayer events are on the way and will be released throughout 2023.
