As it goes, each local event has its own awards ceremony and the Games for Change festival was no different. This year’s highest honors went to Never Alone, a platform game about Alaskan natives. Along with the Game of the Year win, the side-scroller also took home Most Significant Impact. Previously, Never Alone was able to achieve Best Debut Game at the 2015 BAFTA awards.

Another notable victor was 11 bit studios’ This War of Mine, which snagged both Most Innovative and Best Gameplay. Additionally, the war game took the event’s first ever People’s Choice Award, which isn’t too hard to imagine given the popularity of the dark project. This War of Mine also managed to get trophies at multiple locations. For instance, it was recognized by Time as one of the best games in 2014, a list that included aforementioned Never Alone as well.

There’s also a happy ending for developer Tina Gong at the Games for Change festival. Gong’s HappyPlayTime was recognized during an onstage pitch session, which came with a reward of $10,000. Previously, the mobile game about sex positivity around female masturbation was denied access on Apple’s app store, due to its contents, despite focusing on an educational approach. Having a pulsating vulva as a character seems frowned upon. Here’s an excerpt of what HappyPlaytime, a free game you can go play right now, is all about:

Sexuality is one of the most basic instincts of human beings. Being comfortable with your own sexual pleasure is a prerequisite to both being able to healthily accept pleasure from others, and pleasing others.

Unfortunately for many women, there has been a cultural stigma that blocks access to self-stimulation.

The Games for Change festival celebrated its twelfth edition. Programming also included talks from people not necessarily related to the gaming industry, such as Morgan Spurlock, director of Super Size Me.
