Pokémon Go Fest Was A Flop

It was just about as successful as a Magikarp's Splash.

Around 20,000 Pokémon Go fans made their way to Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday with the promise of event-exclusive legendary Pokémon and a great time. Unfortunately, the entire festival went awry. Lines to even get into the event were long and moving at a snail’s pace. Many players were stuck outside in this massive line. Niantic servers were down and users could not log in to their accounts due to the massive player influx, therefore players could not get those sweet, sweet legendaries or participate in raids. Pokémon Go was unplayable.

Festival goers expressed their frustrations during one of the event's presentations, shouting "we can't play". An onslaught of booing followed suit when the CEO of Niantic, John Hanke entered the stage.

Booing Ensues

Hanke addressed the following issues, “I know that some of you guys have had trouble getting logged on this morning, and I wanted to let you know that we’re working with the cell companies—AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, trying to get that worked out, and we’re working on the game server to get that worked out. So, I want to ask you guys, please know, we’ve got the whole Niantic team working against this, so please be patient with us.”

Players were advised to stand close to a nearby cell-tower and use Wi-Fi (which ended up being fruitless). There are reports that Niantic is offering a full refund for the cost of the attendees' tickets, and $100 worth of PokéCoins (the in-game currency of Pokémon Go). However, many people paid thousands of dollars and traveled from outside the United States to attend. The measly 20 dollar refund is just a fraction of many travel costs. All Pokémon Go accounts that were registered at the event will also receive the game's first legendary Pokémon, Lugia.
