Since the release of Star Wars Battlefront 2, the controversy about loot boxes reached an all-time high. Now the ESRB will now affix labels to physical games that feature a variety of paid in-game purchases that include DLC, season passes, and loot boxes.
The organization has launched a new site and video designed to inform parents of the design and how to prevent kids from spending absurd amounts of money without permission.
The ESRB isn't only flagging loot boxes but all in-game purchases that require additional purchases outside of the core game purchase. This includes "bonus levels, skins, surprise items (such as item packs, loot boxes, mystery awards), music, virtual coins and other forms of in-game currency, subscriptions, season passes, upgrades (e.g., to disable ads) and more."
