Endings are a difficult thing to execute, you're not going to please everyone but when a large percentage of your audience is annoyed than maybe there's something wrong. Hence is the case with Assassin's Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade Episode 2: Shadow Heritage where a lot of fans were annoyed with the DLC's ending.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey was the first game to pioneer the use of choice and branching paths within the series but that's not the case in Shadow Heritage. During the finale, Alexios/Kassandra has the decision to either let the love interest, daughter or son of Darius, to go or stay. Regardless of your choice the person stays and you have a child, for many, this was a problem.

Many played Alexios and Kassandra in various different ways, with one of them being the choice to either pursue homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual sexual acts. Many players argue by locking the player into a heterosexual relationship it removes choice and forces the player to lock their character into a heterosexual relationship.

Ubisoft provided Eurogamer with a “couple of general statements” that reads,

“We strive to give players choice whenever possible in Odyssey and apologise to those surprised by the events in this episode,” a company spokesperson told Eurogamer. “Without spoiling it, you will engage in an important relationship as part of a set story. The motivation behind this relationship is yours to explore in game and will be reflected in your character’s story arc. There is one episode left in Legacy of the First Blade which will tie your character’s actions together.”

“We don’t want to reveal too much right now, but we have always tried to keep the story inclusive of people of all sexual orientations, and players will be able to choose their motivations behind this particular narrative depending on their sexual preferences,”

“Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was developed by people of all sexual orientations, backgrounds, genders and beliefs, and we have tried to reflect that within the game.”

This campaign does have a third part but it does seem strange to have Kassandra/Alexios to have a child if the player constantly chooses to answer questions about preferring to be a mercenary or alone. Suddenly having a family after showering people with your desire to be alone does seem strange.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade Episode 2: Shadow Heritage is now available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC through Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
