Code Vein has been linked to FromSoftware's Dark Souls series to a great degree. But over time Code Vein has carved out its own identity thanks to the unique dark fantasy setting and partner system, which features various characters with specialized skills. In the latest behind the scenes look, the developers of Code Vein explain the importance of the partner system along with how they crafted the mechanic so fans don't feel like they're escorting someone.

The NPC partners in Code Vein offer a variety of options such as healing, damage, ranged attacks, and other options that the player must consider when choosing. Director Hiroshi Yoshimura talks about the difficulty of developing the partner system since players have a general negative opinion of NPCs such as escorting and babysitting them. However, it was explained by Yuichi Yoda that partners support your actions and are more like an extension of your own arsenal.

Of course, the partner system is optional. Players can play through Code Vein alone if they wish.

Code Vein launches this September 27th for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. I had the chance to play Code Vein at E3 2019 and stated "Regardless if you're facing a normal enemy or a boss, anything can kill you with ease. This level of tension means you have to take each encounter seriously and if you want that added challenge, going it alone is always an option."
