Fallout 5 has reportedly received full internal approval, signaling Xbox’s renewed focus on expanding the Fallout universe.

The green light has been given for Fallout 5. It's a big change for one of the most well-known game titles. Several news sources and interviews with people who work in the industry say that Xbox and Bethesda have officially accepted the next mainline Fallout game. This means that the long-term plans for the show are now moving forward.

The game won't come out for years, but just the fact that it was approved gives Fallout's future a new sense of urgency, especially since the TV show was such a hit. The story comes from recent conversations between Xbox employees about how they want to handle Fallout in the future.

One report says that Fallout 5 has been cleared by people inside the company.

That being said, Bethesda Game Studios' main teams are still adding new content to Starfield and finishing up work on The Elder Scrolls 6. It's still not clear which company will be in charge of making Fallout 5, but the fact that it was approved shows that Microsoft is paying more attention to the series than it had been.

It looks like some of this work on Fallout 5 costs money. It is said that Microsoft has canceled Blackbird, a secret MMO project at ZeniMax Online Studios. The project had been planned for a while, since around 2018. It was said that the project was a brand-new sci-fi IP that ran on a brand-new system and had just begun making more things.

Unfortunately, the game was shelved during Microsoft's most recent round of cuts, even though employees liked it and management gave the go-ahead. It was mostly a matter of money and strategy, since MMOs are dangerous and expensive and have to go up against big games like World of Warcraft and even The Elder Scrolls Online, which is made by ZeniMax.

For business reasons, Microsoft reportedly chose to put that money into Fallout instead. Fallout is a well-known IP that most people already like. The company decided to invest in a brand that has become very popular again, thanks to the TV show, instead of a risky new MMO. This made a lot of sense. Since people are interested in Fallout again and new TV seasons are likely to keep them interested, they now think that it's a better and more sure way to win.

Even though it has been given the green light, making Fallout 5 will still take a long time.

At the moment, Bethesda Game Studios is finishing up The Elder Scrolls 6 and adding support for Starfield. The game won't come out for years, even though there have been reports that a playable build is already out there. Bethesda usually releases games after Elder Scrolls 6, so Fallout 5 wouldn't have started full production until after that. This could mean that it wouldn't come out until well into the 2030s. Now, though, that time range might be different.

News sources say that Xbox knows how much people want a new Fallout game and is working hard to get it out as soon as possible. Now that the TV show Fallout is so popular, the long wait is harder to understand. Microsoft doesn't want to miss this chance to get things moving again. If Bethesda works on Fallout 5 by itself, it might not be ready on time.

It could be given to another Xbox company to work on. If that happens, it will be the first big Fallout game since 2010 that isn't led by Bethesda. Todd Howard has talked about Fallout 5 in the past, so it sounds like it has been planned for a long time.

People who work on the Fallout TV show say that Howard told them not to use certain stories and settings because they were already planned for Fallout 5. It is said that this was planned before the show even began taking place. That alone makes me think that Fallout 5's story and ideas have been set in stone for a very long time.

Besides Fallout 5, there are rumored to be several other Fallout projects in the works.

In 2021, Todd Howard said that Bethesda already had a one-page paper that explained what Fallout 5 would be. This was even more proof of this. Even though he said the game wasn't out yet, it was clear that Bethesda still cares a lot about that game. If there was a way to speed up growth, he has said it many times, even though he couldn't promise it at the time.

Howard has also said that most of the stories in future Fallout games will still take place in the US. He says this to show that Americana is an important part of the series' personality. As with Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and earlier games, the main focus of the games has always been on post-apocalyptic versions of American towns. Other places may be added, but that has always been the main focus.

It will be possible to play Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas again. More than one company is expected to be involved. There have also been hints from Bethesda employees that they have many plans for more Fallout games, but they haven't said much about them yet. Fallout shouldn't come out every ten years, but this is part of a bigger plan to make it work all the time.

From where we are, it's clear that Xbox has had enough of letting Fallout alone for too long.

Bethesda can't make games the way they normally do now that the series is more well-known than ever. This way, the series can grow without putting too much stress on Bethesda's main teams, whether it's for Fallout 5 or a spin-off game. This method was used with Fallout: New Vegas, which is one of the most well-known games in the series.

More and more people are also saying that Fallout 5 might not even be called that at first. Before it's sold as a main game, it might come out as a stand-alone or spin-off game. A big new Fallout experience should be released before the end of the decade, not in the 2030s. This seems to be the plan, no matter what the name is.

Even though there are no set times yet, Fallout 5 might come out in the next four to five years if work is sped up the right way. Now that the all-clear has been given, the real work can begin behind the scenes. Since Todd Howard already had a long-term plan, it's likely that a lot of the work to get ready has already been done. It's been years since fans have seen real progress, and this is the strongest sign yet that the wasteland is calling again.
