A new rumor has surfaced regarding the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, stating that the game is not only in development right now but will take place in Tokyo.

Grand Theft Auto VI, GTA 6

Back in December 2003, Take-Two, the publishers behind GTA, filed trademarks for GTA: Tokyo, GTA: Bogota, and Grand Theft Auto: Sin City.

According to Techradar, a source stated that Rockstar was “serious” about making a Tokyo version of GTA when GTA 3 and Vice City were released, but the idea was canceled. Techradar explained that Rockstar has difficulty moving a studio outside the USA.

The source went on to explain that GTA VI is in development, but a location hasn’t been settled. However, this isn’t the only game rumored to be in development at Rockstar, with numerous speculations that the next installment in the Red Dead Redemption series is currently being made. The trademark for Agent, another Rockstar game, was renewed back in 2013.

This wouldn’t be surprising given that GTA V is over two years old and that Rockstar put out a job advert for a position to work on the development of a new engine specifically for next-generation systems.
