Metro 2039 Gameplay Trailer Shows a Bigger World Where Exploration Comes with Risks

The February 2027 release is getting closer, and the latest gameplay reveals a much larger and more dangerous world than the trailer initially suggests.

The objective may be within reach, but Metro 2039 is making it clear that getting there will not be a straightforward trip. 4A Games has released a major new gameplay trailer for the game while also confirming that Metro 2039 will officially launch on February 4, 2027.

The footage gives you one of the most detailed looks at the game so far, showing the surface, new combat, weapons, mutants, radiation mechanics, exploration, and the first proper console gameplay running on a PlayStation 5 Pro.

What makes this trailer particularly interesting is that the section being shown is not entirely new to those who have already played the game.

The footage covers one possible route through a much larger surface area, and that distinction is important because the trailer does not fully communicate just how much there is to explore away from the main objective.

You can leave the obvious route and spend a considerable amount of time exploring the surrounding environment instead of simply following the Stranger through a series of ruined buildings before reaching the Novarite fortress inside a nearby dam.

The surface biome is filled with abandoned buildings, garages, underground areas, shops, hidden passages, dangerous irradiated locations, and optional areas that are not shown in the new trailer. As you explore, you can discover supplies, weapon upgrades, other stalkers, mutants, environmental stories, alternate routes, and places that can lead you somewhere entirely different.

Some locations initially look like nothing more than background scenery, but you can actually enter them, discover different entrances, climb through ruined sections, and follow underground passages that connect to other parts of the biome.

That approach is one of the most significant differences between Metro 2039 and the earliest games in the series. The game is still a single-player, story-driven first-person shooter, and it has not suddenly turned into a huge Ubisoft-style open world filled with objective markers.

Instead, 4A Games appears to be taking the larger exploratory philosophy introduced with Metro Exodus and pushing it considerably further. You can still follow your objective directly if that is how you want to play, but the larger environments give you plenty of reasons to step away from the main path.

Exploration also does not constantly tell you where the next piece of content is located.

Rather than opening a map and following a marker to a rare weapon attachment, you often notice a building or distant location and decide to investigate it yourself. That can lead to abandoned garages, a grocery store, a pharmacy, Hotel Berlin, an underground passage, a sniper building, and several smaller locations scattered throughout the area.

These places are also not simply containers filled with ammunition and supplies. Metro 2039 makes exploration dangerous enough that discovering something valuable can feel like an actual reward. Some garages, for example, have extremely high radiation because of the amount of metal throughout the area, meaning most stalkers avoid them.

Your wrist device plays an important role in managing that risk. It records how much filter time you have remaining, warns you about radiation levels, and shows how much radiation you have accumulated while moving through contaminated areas.

Once you leave the radiation behind, the accumulated exposure gradually decreases. This creates the kind of risk-and-reward exploration that fits Metro, where entering a dangerous location is not simply about fighting another enemy but deciding whether whatever you might find is worth the cost.

Some areas are left untouched for entirely different reasons. One location called Gallantry apparently has not seen mutants or stalkers from outside, although the reason is not immediately explained. That means useful supplies have remained inside, but the fact that everyone else has avoided the place makes its contents feel suspicious rather than safe.

The game can become much closer to a horror experience when you start exploring these optional areas.

Mutants can be hiding inside ruined structures, while dark underground sections can make your normal electronic equipment unreliable. Some human-like creatures can camouflage themselves among debris, leaving you moving slowly through an area because you genuinely cannot tell what might emerge from the darkness.

Your equipment is also designed to make you interact with the environment instead of relying entirely on HUD information. You have night vision for extremely dark or foggy environments, while a UV light can reveal things that would otherwise remain hidden.

The lighter can even function as an improvised compass while you are underground because the flame points toward your current objective. These small systems provide you practical reasons to physically interact with the world instead of constantly staring at interface elements.

For example, if you want to know how much time remains on your gas mask filter, you can physically look at the Stranger's wrist. While exploring, you manage equipment and craft items by interacting with the backpack, and you store your objectives, map, and collected notes on a physical tablet.

The new trailer begins after the Stranger has emerged from the darkness of the metro and reached the thawing ruins of Moscow. His objective is to locate a Novarite fortress built into a nearby dam, but the environment quickly becomes part of the threat.

The Stranger himself is also being presented as a different kind of protagonist for the series.

He is a former Spartan, but he is not simply Artyom under another name. 4A Games describes him as an elite soldier who is brutal and adaptable while also carrying a dark past. He is someone who left the metro and never intended to return, and his Spartan armor immediately marks him as somebody with considerable experience and a dangerous reputation.

That history shapes how he approaches combat and survival. 4A Games has described the Spartans as wolves while suggesting that the Stranger is something worse, and the new gameplay gives you a better idea of what that means.

Ultimately, the new trailer only shows one route through what appears to be a much larger surface environment. If you just follow the objective, you can experience the combat, mutants, radiation, and story beats that the trailer highlights.

But if you take the time to explore, Metro 2039 appears ready to reward you with hidden locations, alternate routes, environmental stories, equipment, supplies, and encounters that you could easily miss.

That makes the February 4, 2027 release date more compelling because the latest footage suggests Metro 2039 is not just expanding the scale of the series. It is also expanding how you move through and interact with its world. The familiar Metro combination of survival, combat, exploration, and horror remains intact, but the larger environments give you considerably more freedom to decide how deeply you want to explore them.
