The market research firm Nielsen Company has been sending out surveys regarding the upcoming PlayStation 5. Most questions are related to the pros and cons of the standard and digital versions of the console. However, some users in the United Kingdom are reporting on potential price points of £349 for the former, and £259 for the latter. That converts to around $435 and $323, respectively.
While this is only a marketing survey, data acquired by Nielsen will have some influence on how Sony prices the console. Sony’s goal should be getting the system in to as many people’s homes while maximizing profits. They also have to be mindful of how competitors will react to this. Microsoft may aim to sell the Xbox Series X at a very reasonable price. Nintendo and gaming PC makers may also have deals of their own.
Having a system release at under $400 seems almost a little too cheap. It could be a tactic by Sony to attract consumers to digital only games. But, it is most likely that the actual retail price will be much higher.
