The Dragon Quest community is abuzz after multiple reports of players overheating their Famicoms with hotplates and other devices. It appears that while playing Dragon Quest 3, scorching the game system to nearly 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) will produce a helpful speed run technique. Japanese Speed runner Hitsheegame started experimenting with this after noticing more consistent bugs during hot summer months of the year. This allowed him to beat the game in just 22 minutes. Dragon Quest 3 is an RPG classic from the early days of gaming, at a time when glitches were prominent. One of the more intriguing bugs included rapidly resetting the game system in the hopes of the game booting up with a maxed level 99 party right from the start. It seems that this overheating method is a guaranteed means of achieving this glitch.

Following Hitsheegame’s discovery, many other Dragon Quest fans have been able to reproduce the glitch using all manners of heaters. Some have also found that freezing the system with ice can have a similar result. However, tests like these have a high chance of ruining the Famicom and game or even causing a serious accident.
