Alcat Games, best known for its mastery of tactical CRPG experiences like Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, is pivoting into uncharted territory with its latest title—The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. This marks a radical departure for the studio, trading turn-based tactical systems for a cinematic, third-person action RPG grounded in one of modern science fiction's most richly developed universes. This game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, wants to be one of the most ambitious new AAA space RPGs by focusing on deep customization, dynamic storytelling, and staying true to its source material.

Set in the award-winning universe of The Expanse, originally created by authors James S. A. Corey and later adapted into a critically acclaimed television series, the game unfolds during the timeline of the first two novels (Leviathan Wakes and Caliban's War) and corresponding seasons of the show.

However, rather than retreading familiar ground or reimagining well-known characters like James Holden or Naomi Nagata, Osiris Reborn gives players the opportunity to inhabit a completely new, custom-created protagonist. This design choice provides Alcat with the narrative flexibility to craft an original story that runs parallel to major events from the established lore—freeing the experience from the constraints of canon while remaining deeply immersed in it.

According to Creative Director Alexander Mishulin, Osiris Reborn places a premium on narrative agency and character development. Mishulin talked about how this game is more than just an action-packed RPG a few weeks ago. He said that it's also a very personal journey that the player shapes. In this game, every choice, alliance, and trade you make could change the world, relationships, politics, and even the fate of your group. While comparisons to Mass Effect are inevitable due to the game's third-person perspective and spacefaring backdrop, Mishulin points to Persona 5 as a key source of inspiration—particularly in the way it builds complex interpersonal relationships that fuel the emotional core of the narrative.

The game's character system is designed from the ground up for flexibility. Players will be able to completely change the background of their main character by picking which group they support, such as the United Nations on Earth, the Congressional Republic on Mars, or the Outer Planets Alliance led by Belters.

Each alignment opens up a new story arc, moral problem, or outcome that changes how the story goes. Beyond the politics, the game supports a spectrum of roleplaying styles. Whether players lean toward the pragmatic ruthlessness of a mercenary-for-hire, the diplomacy and idealism of a peace-seeking negotiator, or something more morally ambiguous, Osiris Reborn encourages exploration of identity and ethics in a galaxy rife with tension.

The rough realism of The Expanse world is being reflected in the way combat and exploration work. While there isn't any long-form gameplay video available yet, early development clips and team insights point to a mix of fast-paced action and careful decision-making. Equipment customization, skill progression, and role-specific loadouts promise to support multiple approaches to encounters—whether through brute force, stealth, or technological superiority.

Where Alcat Games excels is in building systems that respect the player's intelligence. Their previous work on Rogue Trader and Pathfinder proved the studio's ability to weave meaningful narratives into layered gameplay mechanics. With Osiris Reborn, they're taking those storytelling instincts and applying them to a more dynamic and cinematic form factor. And they're doing it without compromising the narrative complexity that defines both their own work and The Expanse as a franchise.

The choice to set the game during the early period of The Expanse timeline also creates a unique opportunity for dramatic tension. The socio-political powder keg between Earth, Mars, and the Belt is nearing detonation. While canonical events unfold in the background, players will operate in the margins—interacting with known factions and perhaps even intersecting briefly with characters from the novels or series, without being beholden to their arcs. This parallel narrative design lets Osiris Reborn stand on its own as a fully original experience while offering lore-rich connections for long-time fans.

The gaming community has only seen a small amount of the game's first teaser, but interest is building quickly. People have high hopes for Alcat because of his background and the legacy of The Expanse. Now it's up to the company to keep their word and deliver a science fiction RPG with story, action, choice, and world-building on a AAA level.

What's certain is that The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is not a simple adaptation. It's an expansion—both of the franchise's mythos and of what Alcat Games is capable of creating. For fans of character-driven sci-fi RPGs, and for those seeking a new narrative playground where choices truly matter, this title is poised to become one of the defining genre entries of its generation.
