The Legend of Zelda 35th Anniversary: Several new trademark registrations discovered ahead of series milestone

It has been revealed that last year, a total of five trademarks were registered relating to games in the Zelda franchise.

Understandably, this information has produced tentative hopefulness for a Super Mario All-Stars type bundle to celebrate the series 35th Anniversary (which is on November 12th this year).

Following news that The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass had been registered, it was also found that trademarks were filed for Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and The Windwaker.

Zelda Universe did a deep dive into the registration: Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword were both registered on May the 14th, 2020, while registration for the other three went up on July the 14th, 2020.

The team also discovered an old filing for Twilight Princess post Switch release, but unlike the other games, it had not been renewed.

These discoveries follow on from findings that date back to last year: Similarly, Twitter user NaZyrus07 found that Nintendo had filed new Zelda trademarks on August 11th. They mostly pertained to non-game merchandise, but the company did the exact same thing leading up to Mario's 35th birthday.

It's still unclear what -- if anything -- either of these findings might mean; companies routinely register trademarks for a myriad of reasons, so this isn't necessarily indicative of a new game.

There is also speculation that the trademarks indicate new console libraries will be added to Nintendo Switch Online. The company hit a home run with their NES and SNES libraries, so perhaps they're gearing up to include N64, Gamecube, Wii, and 3DS titles. 

Nintendo has not commented on any of the aforementioned registrations, and with these anniversary specials ranging in their reception from universally positive to wholly negative, it's anyone's guess what the gaming giant has up it's sleeve.
