Sega has announced that Chief Creative Officer Toshiro Nagoshi will be stepping down from his current role come April 2021 and return to Creative Director. While this is a demotion in the corporate hierarchy, it frees Nagoshi from the bureaucratic chaff of management to more closely create games. Nagoshi has been a major part of the Yakuza creative team since the first title released in 2005. He was most recently executive director on Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the first mainline title to star a protagonist other than Kazuma Kiryu (Judgement is considered a spin-off). At Sega, Nagoshi has also contributed to other franchises like Virtua Fighter and Super Monkey Ball. It is also possible that a new property could be made under Nagoshi’s leadership.

The news is part of a larger restructuring at Sega. Due to the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic fallout, Sega has employees to willfully retire. The hope that the new structure will help accelerate growth and a speedy recovery to a healthy business.
