Almost all FPS games that release now have some sort of multiplayer component, but not Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. Instead, according to MachineGames the reason for the absence of a multiplayer mode was to ensure the best possible single-player experience.

“The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player,” said narrative designer Tommy Tordsson Björk in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. “Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That’s the danger if you try to do two things at once.”

Björk stated that the team considers its games as action-adventure and not shooters. This follows Bethesda's reputation, with the company's primary focus on single-player adventures the 2 most recent games being Dishonored: Death of the Outsider and The Evil Within 2. Both which featured extensively fleshed out single-player adventures.

In the midst of the EA controversy involving single-player adventures seeing a studio show that there's a market for these types of games is relieving.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus launches for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 27, 2017.
