Happy 15th Birthday

By fishdalf, Posted 10 Sep 2010
The Sony PlayStation celebrates its fifteenth birthday in North America today and here are some of the great games we fondly remember and spent so much time with all those years back. For their total epicness we salute them.

Crash Bandicoot
The game boasted some pretty great animations, which added to the vibrant jungle backdrops. The game didn’t exactly do anything revolutionary, but it gave us an alternative to Sonic, Mario and perhaps more closely linked – Donkey Kong Country. It was simply a solid platform game that had a cool-looking mascot, and just enough variety to keep things interesting, right up to the final confrontation with the infamous Neo Cortex.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3
The game that blew its two predecessors out of the water, building upon them with some utterly revolutionary moves that fundamentally changed the way we played. Most notable was the revert, that linked vert moves with flat moves and opened levels up to ongoing combos the like of which had never been seen. So impressive was this game, it still remains the pinnacle of extreme sports games to this day for many gamers.

Resident Evil Director’s Cut
A year and a half after the original, and still awesome Resident Evil came an update that rearranged just about every pick-up and monster the mansion had to offer. It also – if you got your hands on the right version – showed all of the uncut FMV sequences that were deemed too gory first time around, and were thus cut. Between this and the original they didn’t just define a genre, they gave birth to one that still flourishes today.

Gran Turismo 2
Critically received as one of the greatest racing games of all time, and who could argue when it boasted such great driving simulation and almost 650 cars to choose from. Simply nothing could touch it at the time of release, as not only was it doing thing’s other racers could only dream of, but it was also doing everything its competitors were doing too, only better. Between GT2 and its predecessor over 20 million copies have been sold.

Tekken 3
The third installment in the series maintained the same great fighting mechanics that transformed the series into an overnight success, but brought a smoothness and fluidity to the gameplay that took it to a higher level. It also introduced nearly every great character you would associate with the series, including: Jin Kazama, Ling Xiayou, Hwoarang, Eddy Gordo, Bryan Fury and Forest Law. Gon also showed his face, becoming possibly the most annoying fighting game character ever.

So those are five of our favourites, what are yours?
Think we should have included Metal Gear Solid, or a Final Fantasy title?

  • I believe I have played all the games mentioned. I loved the first playstation. I have such fond memories of when I was young playing games on it with my family and by myself. Tekken was one of my favorites definitly.

  • THPS2 was a much bigger milestone than 3. And yes, you definitely should have included Final Fantasy VII as it got FF AND RPGS to be known in the Western part of the world. MGS...Not so much.

I'd also like to add the following:

Gran Turismo and Resident Evil are vastly overrated.

Legend Of Dragoon is a cult classic

It was also the Dreamcast release this very date. All hail the fallen Dreamcast.
