Resident Evil: Revelations 2 NYC Comic-Con 2014 Demo

A great survival-horror Resident Evil game in the making

By Grayshadow, Posted 10 Oct 2014

First day at Comic-Con 2014 and I had to immediately check out the outstanding video game panels, first off Capcom. Waiting for Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was vexing but worth it. While past Resident Evil games have shifted from its survival-horror roots the demo for Revelations 2 was more faithful to traditional Resident Evil games.

The demo was brief but allows the player the chance to test out both Claire Redfield and Barry Burton’s daughter Moira. While Claire can handle any combat situation Barry’s daughter refuses to use guns, sticking with melee weapons and her flashlight. The duo doesn’t have the best relationship with Claire having to depend on Moira’s flashlight to highlight hidden objects. Moira isn’t defenseless and can use her melee weapons, such as a crowbar, to open locked areas and attack. He role seems forced, having to perform tasks that Claire herself could easily do herself.

When not controlling Claire or Moira the AI takes over. While artificially controlled character is able to avoid enemies with ease I witness that other participants had trouble navigating the environment due to the other character. Similar to Resident Evil 5 there were some moments when the other character was in the way, making it difficult to shoot or move.

Enemies are aggressive and direct. Unlike the zombies from Raccoon City these creatures will sprint and dive to take out their targets. Claire can easily dispense of these grotesque creatures by evading and proper aimed shots, Moira on the other hand isn’t as reliable. Her melee swings are sluggish and depending on who’re controlling the AI can impede your progress.

The demo was incredibly short and only gave attendees a taste of what Revelations 2 has to offer. The entire demo took about 20 minutes to complete and had the player facing about 6 to 7 enemies in a closed environment. The primary goal of Claire and Moira was to retrieve a set of keys from a dead commando to gain access to a different part of the asylum. Unfortunately it ends with a massive cliffhanger and a short video showcasing the next episode.

Overall I’m content with the small demo. It offer a portion of what Resident Evil Revelations 2 has to offer and whatshould be address when the first episode finally releases. The controls are precise, similar to Resident Evil 4, and the return to survival-horror is a refreshing take from the action heavy atmosphere that the series is known for. HopefullyCapcom will release more information about Claire and Moira’s adventure into hell.
