SoulCalibur VI is one of the most beloved fighting game franchises of all time. Focusing on weapon-based combat players would choose from an array of deadly characters, each a master of their own style and weapon. SoulCalibur VI recaptures the original games and delivers a deeply enriching combat system that we had to the chance to play at NYCC 2018.

The demo included 20 playable characters and 11 playable stages. Not included were Inferno, which was recently confirmed. Each of the stages and characters is beautifully animated, highlighting the character's multiple features. Losing fights cause the fighter to lose armor, exposing more flesh the more the fighter loses.

What is shocking is how easy the controls are to grasp. More acclaimed fighting gamers, like the one I went against, were able to make short work of a beginner player but those just starting out will have a chance to grow. Parrying and counters are easier to pull off but executing more complicated combos will require a great deal of practice. What adds to the strategy is each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, such as Nightmare's slow speed but heavy strikes and Geralt's being ideal for mid-range fighting.

All of this amazing fighting mechanics are brought together with the game's excellent soundtrack and graphics. Colors fill the screen with each special attack spreading flares of brightly illuminated sparks all over the screen. It's pure eye candy.

From what we experienced during NYCC 2018 SoulCalibur VI has a lot of potential for both newcomers and veterans. Those familiar with the combat system will instantly be able to pick up and play while newcomers will have to dedicate more time into understanding the various strength and weaknesses of each fighter.

SoulCalibur VI launches on October 19th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
