Awesomenauts is based in the year 3587. The Awesomenauts themselves are a group of galactic mercenaries supposedly the most powerful mercenaries in the universe at that time. They are called upon to try to end the conflict between robotic armies that have been engaged in what seems to be an endless stalemate in their bid for galactic conquest.
Awesomenauts is a side-scrolling MOBA in which a game developing company known as Ronimo released for the PC, Xbox, and PS3/4. In case you were not aware "MOBA" is a commonly used acronym for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. Much like League of Legends but with the game play of Mario Bros on steroids. The matches are 3v3 with the capability of playing with any friends you may have if you invite them into your party. The basis of the game is just like any other MOBA. Defend your turrets, farm creeps, kill your opposition for more "solar", which is what they call the currency in Awesomenauts, build up your champion and eventually dominate the enemy by destroying their base.
The game is still in it's beta stage yet there is a large selection of mercenaries for you to choose from, some quite more powerful than others and it is blatantly obvious. Although a skilled player can take on any opponent with discipline and technique, the power of some of these mercenaries are so ridiculously strong it becomes frustrating trying to play as any other more interesting seeming mercenaries. Every match you will find yourself fighting the same mercenaries with different names. As mentioned before it is still in the beta stage so you cannot get too angry with the fact because surely they will realize that all mercenaries will have to be balanced eventually. Nonetheless no matter who you choose to play with you are in for a great time, given, of course, a side scrolling MOBA sounds like something you would enjoy.
Each match will last anywhere from 7-20 minutes, rarely ever any shorter or longer than that. Also, because the game is so new there does not seem to be much communication between your teammates other than the usual pointing of fingers of blame as to why your team is getting crushed. There is no one claiming which lanes they would like to defend, and there are no prematch communication between your team making it difficult to select mercenaries that would complement each other most effectively.
You will find yourself running around up and down constantly defending and attacking depending on if you are able to see a window of opportunity for either. The whole experience is pretty chaotic, and unless the players or the developers implement a way for more effective strategizing amongst the teams I do not see this game being much more than something you play if you want to kill 20 minutes before an appointment or errand you need to do in real life. No cash prize tournaments and not much live streaming from your favorite pro players.
Despite the few flaws the game may possess, Awesomenauts is still a solid game, with no bugs that I witnessed and quite fluid and entertaining graphics, narratives, and unique theme songs for each chosen mercenary.
