Meta Ghost: Breaking Show made its Early Access debut in 2024, and after a long wait, the game has finally made its final release. It's an action roguelike RPG developed by Scarecrow Studio. Fast-paced combat, loot-based RPG systems, and flexible character progression. You’re stuck in a cyberpunk future, a deadly reality show battling robotic foes that are taking the place of much of the human workforce.

The premise of the game is simple: You enter a competition with cybernetic enhancements, advanced weapons, and unique abilities to fight your way through waves of machines. Every battle is a change in strategy, a combination and adaptation of your upgrades, and discovering new ways to overcome the next robotic obstacles.

Meta Ghost: Breaking Show gives you a replayable experience, where each run offers new opportunities to experiment with different builds.

You’re not just getting better guns; you’re always making decisions about upgrades, abilities, equipment, and character improvements that affect how each run plays out. Each choice influences the way you play, enabling you to construct a build that matches your preferred style, whether it’s geared towards heavy damage, defense, mobility, or special effects.

The developers of Meta Ghost: Breaking Show have continued adding content to the game, including new features and playable characters. Rose is a new playable character who uses a two-handed spear that hits hard and plays as a melee fighter. These updates introduce greater diversity within the roster and more options to approach combat.

The plot unfolds in a futuristic reality show called Breaking Show. In this world, robots have taken over many jobs once done by humans, creating a conflict between people and machines. You step into the arena as a contestant, cybernetically enhanced and armed, battling robotic foes and trying to survive the savage challenges.

Meta Ghost: Breaking Show expands its universe through the use of several factions that affect both the lore and gameplay. These factions are not just cosmetic choices; everyone brings distinct technological specialties and unique effects through the Driver system. Mirage Media is all about digital projection technology, while Foundation Industries is all about electrical-based abilities.

Instead of relying on long cinematic sequences, the game’s world-building emerges through its gameplay systems. The more you play, the more you get a feel for how each faction, ability, and upgrade ties into the larger futuristic setting. This makes progression feel connected to the world rather than separate from it.

Meta Ghost: Breaking Show is basically a roguelike.

You move through a series of stages with fighting encounters culminating in challenging bosses. Every level offers various paths to choose from so you can determine what rewards and upgrades you want to concentrate on. This adds strategy to each run, letting you plan your build.

Meta Ghost: Breaking Show Roguelike Gameplay

You collect drivers as you clear rooms and defeat enemies, and they give your character different effects.

The upgrades range from simple enhancements, such as movement speed and damage, to more unique features like shields, healing effects, electrical attacks, and illusion clones. Each driver type has its identity, and the more time you spend with the game, the more you begin to learn which ones work best with certain playstyles.

The driver system becomes even more engaging through driver fusion. Once you have gathered enough drivers of one type, or several different driver classes, you can combine them to find new effects. This gives you another reason to think carefully about which upgrades you collect throughout your run instead of simply choosing the strongest option available.

Relics provide another layer of customization for your builds. These items offer passive bonuses and are available in a handful of different rarity tiers. Some relics are simple improvements, such as increased attack speed, health, movement speed, or critical chances, while others are more drastic and change the way you approach them.

There are also special rooms with vending machines where you can spend collected chances on useful items and relics. Your rewards, routes, and upgrade choices are different each time you play, and Meta Ghost: Breaking Show always encourages you to try different routes and combinations.

Beyond individual runs, Meta Ghost: Breaking Show includes play and permanent progression systems. The operating system functions as a shared skill tree where you spend earned resources to enhance offense, defense, health, critical chance, and other passive bonuses.

You can unlock useful abilities like destroying enemy projectiles, rerolling Drivers and Relics, and getting more revives. You can also customize your characters' weapons to improve them. Every character has their own weapons and skills, and every skill can be upgraded with many options. You can refund upgrades at any time, so you are free to try different relics without the fear of making a permanent mistake.

Meta Ghost: Breaking Show Combat Mechanics

Implants are equipment that grant your character extra passive benefits.

Since every character is a cybernetically enhanced fighter, you can equip implants for different body slots, upgrade useful ones, or remove equipment that no longer fits your current build. These upgrades become especially important when trying to strengthen weaker areas of your character.

The playable characters each bring a different combat style. Tauka's strengths are his fast melee attacks, swift movement, and flashy cutting abilities. Simon is equipped with dual pistols and impressive mobility to get around the flanks of enemies while dishing out damage. Jeen wields a heavy two-handed weapon and trades a dodge for an impact shield that allows her to soak up attacks in a different way.

Rose also has a second melee option with her two-handed spear. She is particularly effective at powerful attacks, dodging enemy attacks, and controlling groups of enemies with her powers. Her playstyle rewards precise movement and timing, unlike other melee characters.

As you progress in the game, there are different degrees of difficulty you will encounter. The greater difficulty levels have stronger enemies, improved boss abilities, and new challenges that will make you want to keep refining your builds. And if you find things are just too much to handle on your own, you can also team up with other players in online co-op play.

Meta Ghost: Breaking Show combat is about quick reactions, positioning, and using your abilities right. Each character has four main moves: a basic attack, a stronger attack that can be charged, a defensive move such as a dodge or block, and an ultimate move. Strong attacks have to be charged up often, whereas ultimate abilities take longer to charge up but do a lot of damage.

Stunning opponents is a big part of fighting.

Do enough damage, and you can break an enemy’s stun meter and create a brief opening where they are vulnerable. Now you can prepare powerful attacks and follow up with your strongest abilities. Ultimate abilities are also a powerful way to gain temporary immunity while using them, so timing their use can save you from incoming damage.

The combat system is good because it gives you many ways to approach fights. Characters feel different, and your build choices can change your strategy completely. You can experiment a lot with the combination of drivers, relics, implants, and weapon upgrades.

The biggest downside is that the beginning of a run can feel slower before your upgrades begin to stack. Combat becomes a lot more engaging as your build starts to come together, abilities get stronger, and your character starts to develop a unique identity.

Progression is also about making everyone stronger. Even if you don’t reach the final stage, you still get resources for permanent upgrades. This means unsuccessful attempts still help improve your future runs, rather than feeling wasted.

Meta Ghost: Breaking Show uses a colorful cyberpunk-inspired art style with a cartoon-like presentation. It doesn’t aim for realism, but for character designs that are easy to identify, effects that are easy to see, and combat situations that are easy to understand. This is especially useful in battle, when so many abilities and projectiles are on screen at once.

Each character has their own animations and attack effects to help distinguish their play style. The various factions, weapons, and upgrade effects also add visual variety to the game, making repeated runs less repetitive. The various effects also help you identify your skills more easily in hectic battles.

The sound design does an impressive job of complementing the fast-paced nature of combat with impactful weapon effects, ability sounds, and enemy reactions.

Attacks feel responsive, and the audio helps provide you with a sense of when abilities are triggered or when something big is going on during fights. The sound effects and the combat feedback work together to give every encounter a little more punch.
