Today Nintendo its first Nintendo Direct. Due to the passing of Nintendo’s president and direct host, Satoru Iwata, it was announced that all Direct announcements would cease for a period of time. Today Nintendo restarted the dorment series to showcase the upcoming games and content updates coming to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, as well as some of the company’s 2016 plans.

New Super Smash Bros Character

In an unexpected but expected announcement, Nintendo revealed the newest character to join the Super Smash Bros. roster. Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 will join Nintendo’s notoriously popular fighter. Like other DLC characters Cloud will come with his own stage variant, moves set based on the Final Fantasy 7 games and movies, costumes that reflect the Cloud’s design changes, and a new stage set in Midgar. Players will have to contend with environmental hazards caused by the summons found in Final Fantasy 7. Expect appearances from Odin, Ifrit, Ramuh, and even Bahamut Zero! 

Lastly new Final Fantasy-themed costumes modeled after the series’ Chocobo character are coming to the game.

More Super Smash Bros. News Coming Soon

Nintendo knows that their fans want more Super Smash Bros. content. In response Nintendo revealed that it will host a Super Smash Bros. special Nintendo Direct in December.

While Nintendo didn’t provide any details what this could curtail it could possibly be another poll for the next character. With Ryu and now Cloud joining the fray it’s clear that anyone can join the roster at this point, and the mystery is hard to bear.

The Legend of Zelda Wii U and Twilight Princess HD Confirmation

Many are waiting patiently for the next Legend of Zelda game, in response Nintendo confirmed that Link’s next adventure will launch in 2016. Nintendo also revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD edition will be available on Wii U in 2016 on March 4, 2016, in time for the 30th anniversary of the franchise. Amiibo hunters should be interested as the game comes with a special Wolf Link Amiibo, with the game suppose other Zelda themed Amiibos.

The Legend of Zelda Wii U was suppose to release in 2015 but was delayed for further development.

Star Fox Zero Coming Soon

The Legend of Zelda wasn’t the only game delayed until 2016, Star Fox Zero’s new released date is now scheduled for April 2016.

Zero will release on the Wii U on April 22, 2016 . Star Fox Zero was originally suppose to release in 2015 but was delayed for more development time.

Mother 3

Nintendo didn’t forget about the retro gaming community. The developer revealed that Mother 3 will come to the Wii U Virtual Console library in December of this year. While this announcement wasn’t made in the English version of the Direct stream, only shown in the Japanese version, this release could be a Japan exclusive.

Mother 3 is the follow-up to Earthbound, a cult classic RPG that was never released outside of Japan originally. This year Nintendo released Earthbound Beginnings on the Virtual Console, originally titled Mother, so a chance of Mother 3 coming to the US isn’t slim.

New Splatoon Gets More Free Content Today

The highly competitive game Splatoon is getting more free content until 2017. The first stage Muse D’d Alfonsino will release tomorrow and includes rotating objects to avoid. Mahi Mahi Resort is separate stage set at a poolside resort, with a section of the stage rising up during the course of the match for more ground to cover in ink. 

The update will also include 40 new costumes and pieces of gear.

The Great Amiibo Hunt Continues

Spent enough money on Amiibos, Nintendo doesn’t think do. The next wave of the popular DLC figurines are coming January 22 and will include Lucas, Blasthers, Mr. Resetti, Kicks and Celeste.

Joining the release of Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival are Isabelle and Digby. Those who purchase the upcoming fighting game Pokken Tournament will get a limited edition Shadow Mewtwo Amiibo Card, not Amiibo figurine. 

That’s not all a Gold Mega Man Amiibo is set to release with the special edition of Mega Man Legacy Collection. With over 21 million Amiibos sold worldwide, 8.6 million being Amiibo cards, these tiny figurines are making more money than the actual games they support.

Super Mario Maker Update

Those having trouble surfing through the many stages in Super Mario Maker don’t fret, Nintendo has a new solution. A new brower-based portal has been created to aid in searching for specific levels that you want. No longer will you have to navigate constant menus and test various stages to find the right one.

Hyrule Warriors Getting New Warriors

Zelda and Impa are no longer the only female characters in Hyrule Warriors, a new female Link has joined the fight.

Called Linkle was shown highlighting her distinct style of fighting, using a combination of crossbow attacks and powerful sword swings. However unlike Link Linkle will use a spinning kick attack as oppose to the notorious sword spinning attack.

Linkle will join the other characters in the release of Hyrule Warriors on the 3DS when it releases on March 25, 2016. I wonder, will we see a male version of Zelda soon?

Two Dragon Quest Games Coming to 3DS

Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King are coming to the 3DS in 2016. Many fans of the series have been clamoring for these two titles to come to the west and now Nintendo is making it happen. This is another reason why perhaps Mother 3 will come to the US.

Two Editions of Fire Emblem Fates Detailed

Fire Emblem Fates will be available in several different forms, including two $40 packages.

Nintendo confirmed that Birthright and Conquest will retail for $40, each with their own complete story. Purchasing one will allow you to purchase the other for $20 digitally. The third version called Revelation will become available after launch.

A special edition called Fates will retail for $80 and come with all three games, an artbook and a 3DS XL carrying pouch.

Fire Emblem Fates launches for 3DS on February 19 and will be followed by DLC, the first which includes a map will be free.

Retro Pokemon Games Coming Back

Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow are coming to Nintendo 3DS February 27. 2016. Relive the classic adventure of Red and Green as they attempt to become the best Pokemon trainers in the world.

Recreated in their original state players can trade and battle one another wirelessly. In addition a “free-to-start” game called Pokemon Picross will launch this December.

The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes Getting New DLC

The recently release The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes is getting free DLC. 

The update called Den of Trials will include 30 dungeons as you and three friends attempt to beat every enemy in the game. In addition two new uniforms will be added called the Fierce Diety, which allows you to shoot in four directions, and the Lineback Uniform, allowing the wearer to see hidden treasure chests.

You can download Den of Trials this December 2 on 3DS.
