If there is a game we’re looking forward to with great anticipation in 2011 it's Defenders of Ardania, a tower defense title being developed by Most Wanted Entertainment. Players can play both offensive and defensive, and the game boasts beautiful graphics and ambience known in the Majesty universe. Defenders of Ardania still offers three different playable races, a variety of defense towers (and upgrades), 24 types of units and interactive environments that directly affect the gameplay.
Defenders of Ardania also has a promising multiplayer mode and several game modes. In it you can play up to four players and decide if they will face or whether they will join the computer to try to win. It’s worth mentioning that the game's difficulty will vary depending on the number of users, so the more people join, the higher the difficulty. The game will be distributed by Paradox Interactive and recently Andras Klujber, chief designer of the project, provided details on it. Klujber reinforces the idea of attack and defense at the same time. "The enemies will continue attacking us, like any other game belongs to the tower defense style, but Defenders of Ardan they will also have to worry about the defense of their bases," he said.
Defenders of Ardania is more or less Tower Defense, though it brings some interesting innovations in game modes. One is the possibility of leading the attackers in battle to control the enemy base. This will inject some additional enjoyment in the game, since that will increase the chances of attack. Another detail we know is the fact that it's real-time. Players must oversee the production of new units and upgrades, for example, while riding their army after choosing one of the three races available in the game. It is noteworthy that each race has its own characteristics, such as location on the map, types of towers and units, etc. Spells will also be available to players, so be sure to enjoy some more of the game's world.
The fact that the title is set in the Majesty universe is also a big difference. According to Andras Klujber, the cool thing is that much of the series will be brought to Defenders of Ardania: race, history, environment, etc. Due to the use of the fantastic world of Majesty, the tower defense's Most Wanted Entertainment will also include spells.
Something also worth noting in this game, incidentally, is the fact that players can take on both the offensive and defensive. This provides a unique difference between the tower defense style games available on the market, similar to Double Fine’s Iron Brigade and 505 Games’ Orcs Must Die! The game also features 24 different towers, which can undergo numerous upgrades, 24 different units (also upgradeable) and an interactive environment that directly influences the gameplay for each match.
Paradox Interactive often refers to Defenders of Ardania as a next-generation tower defense. By the looks of it, I think it might be. We find this extremely valuable and interesting revitalization that some game developers could hopefully promote in the future. The game will be released in the third quarter of 2011, for PC, iPad, PS3 (PlayStation Network) and XBLA (XBox LIve Arcade).
