Let's Revive | Freedom Fighters

The Big Apple would have its local heroes step up and show us that even self-proclaimed gods of the free world, bleed red.

With the release of the Next Gen Consoles and the PC staying ever dominant, I decided to go back through my memories and just whittle on about games I enjoyed playing. I'm sure these titles have been played to death but are they worth reviving? Is it Shawshank Redemption for the forgotten titles? Well, I guess I'm about to find out.

I'm going to go back to the Original Xbox, PS2 and PC, to a little game by developers IO Interactive, called Freedom Fighters released in 2003.

Man this game was freaking awesome! I remember spending hours on this title, multiple playthroughs, just talking about it makes me want to play it. The gameplay was top notch, being able to eventually command up to 12 AI as you, Christopher Stone, a plumber-turned Freedom Fighter battle in an alternative history, where the Soviet Union has invaded New York City. The more Charisma you have, the more fighters that will fight by your side and listen to your commands, as you try and attempt to retake occupied sections of New York. Guerrilla warfare is present in real American history and with this title; it feels like fighting the good fight.

Being able to control each AI individually, was a big part of the success for me with this title. You, you and you over there, you, cover our rear, the rest are with me, how many 3rd person shooters can you give such orders? Yeah ok, Attack, Defend and Follow but games are what you 'the individual' make it.

The weapons are varied, ranging from the American Magnum, obviously the Soviet AK-47 to Rocket Propelled Grenades, also, always carrying your trustee wrench, for escape through the sewer system and general bonking over the heads of Soviets.

The other big part of the game that there was no set path and visiting one occupied section of New York, and completing certain objectives there would affect the scenario in another section. An example, destroying a snipers hideout in one section, would mean no snipers in the other. Very cool!

Freedom Fighters is on the Microsoft NTSC list of backward compatible games (from what I could tell), and an original Xbox, PS2 is cheap as chips, so pick one up, if you haven't got one already; maybe there is a title you should check out or just re-live the glory days, if it's not revived. I personally, would love to play Freedom Fighters in full HD on 360, PC or PS3. With the technology now available on those consoles and a great starting point, smaller teams can create something much more engrossing, a much more alive New York, smaller battles going on in the background; regardless of occupation even The Big Apple would have its local heroes step up and show us that even self-proclaimed gods of the free world, bleed red.

With a spit shine, this title could make a bigger impact on our community than the original; spruce up the story, dust down the team commanding aspects, maybe add a multiplayer co-op campaign, rub in the polish so to speak, give me a: I'm taking back New York feeling.

It already has easy to master controls, epic gameplay but sadly a short story; this title will make you want to play it over again straight away, and you should, try a different route, different tactics, there is more than one way to win a war: I refuse to be oppressed.
