My Favorite LoL Champs
Games by OnMercury on Jan 21, 2012
League of Legends is a free-to-play MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) game, a genre perhaps best known for the Defense of the Ancients mod for WarCraft III. MOBAs are team-based strategy games that usually involve capturing objectives and screaming at your teammates in the in-game chat. The "community" is among the worst in the gaming world—only named such in the same sense as prison, or Australia.
That said, LoL has a lot of really colorful and diverse characters, which is part of the fun. The game has something for everyone, whether it be lich mages or pig-riding vikings. The huge variety of champs is one of the game's highlights. Here are some of my favorites.
5. Master Yi
GET dunked.
A weird, seven-eyed hermit with swords on his boots, Yi looks pretty ridiculous. And his capabilities certainly match his appearance in late-game, if you work on his attack speed. Plus, he's the star of a hilariously deranged "pro guide" that gives all the wrong advice.
4. Garen
Spin to win.
Garen hits like a truck, especially early game. He’s got high damage output, and his defensive capabilities aren’t half bad, either. Trouble is, he’s screwed against most ranged champions, and spell-users have their way with him much of the time.
3. Corki
This is Major Tom to Ground Control!
An old midget in an airplane that’s only able to hover? Obviously, Corki isn’t one of the more serious champions, and he’s better off for it. Most of his dialogue includes aviation terms that hide vulgar puns or jokes. Also, David Bowie. Bonus points if you understand all of them.
2. Fiddlesticks
Fiddlesticks is just silly as hell. He’s got a strong ability set and he’s a great counter for noob champs like Tryndamere, but the true appeal of Fiddle is his skins. Fiddlesticks can be a pirate, a bandito and a pumpkinhead scarecrow. And of course, there’s the amazing Surprise Party Fiddlesticks.
1. Malphite
Let's rock.
Malphite’s the man. I love playing as this guy. He’s got good base damage, his abilities can disrupt and slow enemies and he can fill a variety of roles, including tank, jungler and bruiser. And then there’s his ultimate ability, which is among the best in the game. Malphite careens toward enemies and slams into them, sending them flying into the air—awesome in team fights, especially for initiating.
