The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 remains one of the most renowned and widely used graphics cards globally. For four consecutive years, it has been the best-selling GPU on Steam, earning it the nickname "people's GPU."

The RTX 3060 remains popular among gamers in 2025 due to its 12GB of VRAM, support for DLSS and ray tracing, and all at a low price. But can it still play modern games, or is it just living in the past? Let's see.

The 2021 Mining Apocalypse

Cryptocurrency mining was the primary driver of the market in 2021. Bitcoin was rising to more than $50,000, and Ethereum was climbing to almost $1,500. Prices for GPUs increased faster than inflation, making it difficult for gamers to find affordable ones.

NVIDIA released the RTX 3060 for $329, saying it would save gamers. But it felt like winning the lottery to find one on store shelves.

That year was also a turning point because NVIDIA released the LHR (Lite Hash Rate) limiter, designed to curb Ethereum mining. Miners were angry, but gamers were generally happy, despite ongoing issues with the supply.

The RTX 3060 became a symbol of that crazy time. Back then, having one felt like having a top-of-the-line RTX 5090 today.

Core Specifications and Architecture

The RTX 3060 features a GA106 GPU based on the Ampere architecture. It has 3,584 CUDA cores, 28 second-generation RT cores, and 112 Tensor cores. Ray tracing performance was no longer just a feature to tick off; it was useful, especially at medium settings.

DLSS 2.0, introduced in 2021, revolutionized performance and image quality, making it less necessary to sacrifice visual quality for smooth frame rates.

In 2025, the RTX 3060 is expected to support DLSS 4, which will significantly extend its lifespan and keep it relevant in the modern gaming landscape.

The 12GB VRAM Problem

The 12GB of GDDR6 memory initially was a great feature. It was even better than the RTX 3070's 8GB and the RTX 3080's 10 GB of memory. However, there was a problem: the memory bus was only 192 bits wide, which limited the bandwidth to 360 GB/s. The RTX 2060 Super, on the other hand, had less VRAM but offered 448GB/s.

There was a lot of memory space, but not much throughput, which was strange. It's like a big truck with a small engine that can go fast, but not very fast. The 12GB capacity was more of a marketing gimmick than a real benefit.

It's more than enough for Full HD gaming, but the GPU itself starts to have trouble with Quad HD. The number "12GB" on the box, though, must have looked cool.

Some of the most critical specifications include 12GB of GDDR6 memory, a 192-bit bus, 360GB/s bandwidth, 170W of power consumption, and support for PCIe 4.0. Millions of people worldwide still use the RTX 3060, one of the most popular graphics cards on Steam.

It costs between $200 and $300 on the used market, which is a fair price given its performance.

Test Setup and Methodology

We tested the RTX 3060 with Windows 11, a Ryzen 5 8400F processor, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM running at 6400 MHz.

We tested all of the games at 1080p, and some of them at 1440p as well. We tested 15 games, including 9 major releases from 2024 to 2025 and 6 popular online games, to assess their performance with both native and DLSS.

Game Performance Results

Silent Hill 2

With DLSS Quality mode and medium settings, the game ran at an average of 60fps. To keep a similar frame rate, you had to lower the settings when playing natively.

The Last of Us Part 2

Without DLSS and at 1080p with the highest settings, performance stayed around 50fps. When I enabled DLSS Quality, the frame rate increased to approximately 80fps, allowing the game to run smoothly on high settings.

Cyberpunk 2077

The game ran at 60fps without DLSS and at 80fps with DLSS enabled, when the settings were high and the resolution was set to 1080p. Ray tracing only worked when the settings were low or medium.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

It was known for not being well-optimized, but it did achieve 60fps at medium settings with DLSS Quality. The average native performance was approximately 55fps, which is slightly lower than the target of 60 fps.

God of War Ragnarök

This game was very well optimised and ran at 70fps at maximum settings without DLSS, and approximately 90fps with DLSS set to Quality. It even worked well at 1440p.

Black Myth: Wukong

The game ran at 60fps at 1080p high settings without DLSS. It maintained 60fps, even on Ultra settings with DLSS enabled.

Mafia: The Old Country

With DLSS Quality and low settings at 1080p, the frame rate stayed around 60fps. Without DLSS, the frame rate dropped significantly.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

With DLSS Quality set to High, the average frame rate remained stable at 60fps. Playing at low settings on native performance was possible, but the image quality was not as good.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2

When played at Ultra settings with DLSS Quality, the game ran at an average of 60fps. To get smooth performance while playing natively, I had to lower the settings.

Marvel Rivals

With DLSS Ultra Quality set to High, frame rates ranged between 85 and 90fps, ensuring the game ran smoothly.

Rust

With the highest settings and 1080p resolution without upscaling, the frame rate ranged from 100 to 120fps. The most VRAM used was 11.5GB, which demonstrates the utility of 12GB of memory.

PUBG

At 1080p Ultra settings, the average frame rate was 140 to 150fps.

World of Tanks

With Ultra settings and Full HD resolution, the frame rate was around 200 fps and stayed stable.

Counter-Strike 2

In competitive settings (low with MSAAx4), the average frame rate was approximately 400 fps. The GPU wasn't being utilized to its full potential, suggesting that the CPU was the issue.

Dota 2

At 1080p with all settings maxed out, the RTX 3060 averaged 200 fps, with slight drops to 150–160 fps during intense team battles.

RTX 3060 vs. RTX 2060 Super performance comparison

The RTX 2060 Super demonstrated excellent durability in our previous tests, so we compared it to the RTX 3060. The RTX 3060 has more CUDA cores, more memory (12GB vs. 8GB), and uses less power on paper. However, the 2060 Super features a wider 256-bit bus and increased bandwidth.

In most games, the RTX 3060 is 15–20% faster than the other cards, and sometimes even 25% faster. But some titles don't change much, and the 2060 Super is very close behind. The conclusion is clear: the 3060 is not a generational revolution; it is a better, more efficient version of the 2060 Super.

Pros :

  • 12GB VRAM is still useful in 2025
  • DLSS makes performance much better
  • Support for stable drivers and a wide range of devices
  • Gamers have proven that it is reliable and popular.
  •

Cons:

  • The memory bus is only 192 bits wide.
  • No support for frame generation
  • By today's standards, a 170W power draw is considered inefficient.
  • The Ampere architecture is getting old.

Final Thoughts

The RTX 3060 will still be a good choice for Full HD gaming in 2025. It can run most modern games smoothly, but performance at 1440p varies depending on the game. Ray tracing should be seen as a nice extra feature rather than a must-have.

It's still a great deal for $200 to $300, with DLSS 4, good driver support, and a wide range of compatibility.

The RTX 3060 has endured shortages, mining booms, and shifting trends, yet it remains one of the most popular GPUs ever produced. The RTX 3060 remains a living legend for gamers seeking a reliable Full HD performer with features that will remain relevant in the future.
