Reviews and Bayonetta Impressions
Games by Nerdboy on Oct 12, 2009
Okay so far I've got the Digger HD and TMNT Reviews up right now. (Thanks to Ron for retrieving the Digger HD review). In the next few days I'll be posting the Critter Crunch reviews and let you know what reviews to be expecting after that ;) (COUGH UNCHARTED 2 COUGH) Not giving any hints though. (COUGH NATHAN DRAKE COUGH) That would take all the fun out of guessing what my upcoming review might be.
Bayonetta Demo Impressions:
Bayonetta never really looked appealing to me up until recently. The very clear "sex sales" route they're taking with the main character doesn't work with me so I just didn't see anything particularly great about it. At first glance Bayonetta looks like a DMC clone with a female lead. After playing the demo I can say that while the two are similair Bayonetta is much easier to get into as far as difficulty is concered. Not to mention with that "automatic mode" it shouldn't be too difficult of a game when it's finally released.
Bayonetta knows what type of game it is and doesn't let that go unknown. It is a crazy, over the top, DMC style action game....with hair. Right from the start Bayonetta lets it be known through music, the way your character walks like she's on the runway and the over all just flashyness of the battle system that this isn't in the least bit a serious game. Luckily...it doesn't need to be.
While the cutscenes weren't exactly exciting (i ended up skipping them due to boredom) the gameplay is where it shines. The battle system is fluid and easy to pick up. While sometimes it seems too much you never feel like you're losing control and this goes a long way. But most importantly the game is really fun. If you don't like the story or look of the game you'll probably love the crazy over the top battles as it's hard to find something quite like it. There were a few "boss" fights contained in the demo and all of them were absolutely insane. Whether you were on top of a bridge getting ripped apart and slammed against a wall or standing on the cieling as you fought the game just didn't stop throwing insane moments at you.
However, the fighting was just about the only thing I really liked about Bayonetta. I didn't particularly care for the music or story of the game. While the gameplay was fun and exactly what I was hoping it would be, I think Bayonetta will be a very hard sell considering what games it will be coming out in the same time frame with. It's on my radar...I just don't know for how long.
Also, if anyone is wondering the PS3 version which is handled by Sega does have some noticeable screen tearing but nothing else that I personally noticed. Screen tearing I only noticed at the very beginning but there's nothing that I can see that would dramatically change how the game plays. Of course I haven't seen the 360 version so I can't compare.
